Alistair Darling in International Rescue?

The Sun's Thunderbirds themed response to Alistair Darling's International Rescue Package

10th October 2008

Thunderbirds made the front page of The Sun yesterday as the tabloid ridiculed Chancellor Alistair Darling's 'Thundersplurge' response to the UK's failing banking system.

A bizarre mix of Darling's head and John Tracy's body was used to convey the gravity of the situation currently facing high street banks such as HBOS and RBS. The iconic '5, 4, 3, 2, 1' countdown was also used to summarise the key points of the £500bln cash injection that the Treasury will use to bail out the banks.

Alistair Darling has long been caricatured as a Thunderbird character due to his oversized eyebrows and the long-running suspicion that in political terms he is isn't really his own man. For an interesting animation of the puppet apparently being controlled by his master, click here.

Maybe this is one kind of 'international rescue' the Tracy family should stay well clear of...
