Yep, my copy of Rarities has the cover you mentioned.

Mind you, in those days I had no idea who Alan Tarney was, so he was a bit of a mystery member. It would have been so easy to find out if I'd only had access to the internet. Mind you it doesn't have all the answers, even now. Just where are those Cliff and the Shads puppets? It would be such a shame if they were thrown out.

...there are some replicas of Cliff/Shads puppets that appear at conventions, they are complete with instruments and aren't bad, but I think that's the closest we'll get now! A shame as they must have been the first Supermarionation puppets that were actually supposed to be the people upon which they were based!

I've often wondered what happened to the puppets. I particularly liked the ones made of Hank Marvin and John Rostill.

I was at a Shadows concert in Melbourne in the 80s and they asked for requests from the audience....and someone asked for Sacha. There was that awkward moment where we were torn between the embarassment of someone asking for something that wasn't a Shadows hit...and wondering if they would play it. They didn't. However the Shadows were back next year and Hank apologised for not playing Sacha the year before - he had no idea it was a hit in Oz. This time they were ready and Sacha was played. Loved it. Perhaps someone should have requested Lady Penelope as well.
Here's a nice version, from 1988 (thirty years ago!) of Sacha!

Thanks for the clip!

Fascinating interview with Ray Martin as well. I couldn't believe my eyes when I recognised Geoff Harvey playing in the band. He was the music director at Channel 9 for 38 years and also composed many Oz TV themes.

Ian Kershaw who posted the clip is very knowledgable about The Shadows. It would be interesting to see what else he might post on YouTube.

Don't you love Hank Marvin's quirky sense of humour?

Hank could have been a comedian. Apparently he was in talks with the BBC in the early '70s about having his own show, but nothing came of it. This as a result of appearing every week on Cliff's TV show. His banter on stage with Bruce is always amusing and he always gives interviewers the run around!

Here's the newly released BBC recording of 'Lady Penelope'. Composed by Bennett, Welch, Rostill and recorded on 9th December 1966...
