View Full Version : Magic Moments

Here are some of my magic moments from Gerry's shows and I would love to hear yours!

Supercar – Supercar flies to Brighton using back projection from the famous 4 minute speeded up film footage of a train journey on the London to Brighton line (Runaway Train).

Fireball XL5 – Taped ancestral voices and ghostly portraits on the walls chanting and exhorting the last of the Zanadus to kill the Lazoons who brought disease and destruction to their lost civilisation. (The Last of the Zanadus)

Stingray – Guest star appearance of Steve Zodiac (in full colour) as Johnny Swoonara who is cast to play Troy Tempest in a film about Stingray. (Stand By For Action)

Thunderbirds – Bursting tyres and screeching brakes as 3 elevator cars catch a falling plane, the atomic-powered Fireflash. One unit fails, careers off and blows up an empty plane. (Trapped in the Sky)

Captain Scarlet – Scarlet thinks their quarters on Lunarville 7 may be bugged by the Lunar Controller. He finds a hidden microphone and yells “Goodnight, Orson!!!”. Orson, the Controller’s assistant, who has an earpiece to his head, jumps out of his skin! (Lunarville 7)

Joe 90 – “No bell! No voice! No Ghost!” says Kline as he comes out of the crypt. A moment later, a brightly lit Joe 90, dressed as an Angel, flies through the night sky using a jet pack and lands on top of him. (The Unorthodox Shepherd)

Secret Service – Lady Martha Hazlewell steals a motorbike and roars down the road in her quest for the counterfeit bank plates. She looks and sounds as mad as a hatter! What’s more, she used to be Mrs Harris in another series. (More Haste Less Speed)

UFO – Turner and Straker chase each other round the Harlington-Straker Studios in go-karts while time stands still all around them. Turner periodically stops and roars with laughter shouting “Big man, Straker!” (Timelash)

Space 1999 – Dave Prowse as “The Creature” that cannot be killed by vacuum, chlorine, electrocution or missiles but is brought down by a tiny bee. (The Beta Cloud)

Terrahawks – Yung-Star spends Christmas dancing with the Terrahawks during a seasonal ceasefire. (A Christmas Miracle)

New Captain Scarlet – Captain Black suggests to his wife, Destiny, that their children should have some cake. “Are you feeling alright?” says Destiny to Scarlet pointedly. “You tell me.” mutters Scarlet under his breath. (Enigma)

If you haven’t seen NCS then I bet the last one has thrown you! I'm quite a 'dark horse' as they say.

Ok here's two that always stick in my mind:

Stingray: Commander Shore on the ancient galleon with Phones when Troy unleashes the laughing gas. Always thought Ray Barrett had a cold or something as Shore sounds a little gruffer than usual. (The Ghost Ship)

Thunderbirds: Have to agree with earlier posts here in remembering Trapped in the Sky however watching the very first time Thunderbird 1 heads down for it's launch brings a smile to my face every time.

Probably one of the best scenes from any Anderson show, Conrad. That scene was cut for the episode's original transmission in the UK as it was going out at 11.30am.

Some interesting choices on this thread.
Off the top of my head...

Supercar - Island Incident, Beaker using thousands of volts to make a piece of toast.
Fireball - Last of the Zanadus when Jim thingy takes off in XL5 and Robert repeats his words 'No will of my own...'
Stingray - the galleon coming out of the mist in The Ghost Ship, accompanied by that great music on the flute.
Thunderbirds - Trapped in the Sky when Scott announces his imminent arrival to those stiff suits at London Airport.
Scarlet - Winged Assassin: Scarlet gets short tempered with Blue as they race after DT19, ejects him and rams the wheels.
Joe 90 - Joe and Mac taunting Clayton with a trumpet in See You Down There. 'Go and see a psychiatrist!'; 'Crazy!'
Secret Service - The plant in A Question of Miracles explodes just before the opening credits.
UFO - First interceptor launch in Identified intercut with shots of Gabrielle Drake and that music.
1999 - The intro of Troubled Spirit.
Terrahawks - Stew Dapples fighting the heckler, can't remember the ep title.
New Scarlet - Trap for a Rhino as the Rhino charges up that straight road, guns blazing with Scarlet and Destiny in pursuit.

... but I may change my mind next week. :)

Lots of good ones listed so far - especially the opening scene to Space: 1999 "The Troubled Spirit" and the Terrahawks crowbar birth (I had forgotten about that).

Thunderbirds - "Trapped in the Sky" - the entire rescue of the Fireflash - one of the best Anderson episodes ever.

Space: 1999 - Victor Bergman's farewell to Alpha speech in "Wargames." Also the birth of Jackie Crawford (Sandra's reaction) and then the horror of him growing fast followed by the 'return of mother and baby safe and sound all from "Alpha Child."

That is one brilliant piece of Zero X artwork. I never had the TV 21 comic as kid, and have only discovered some of the great artwork over the last few years. Great stuff.

I am slowly filling the gaps in my TV 21 collection, i need 16 more issues and 2 summer specials to complete the set. But i have also enjoyed the recent books of reprints and am looking forward to Volume 3 later this year.

How about Penny's stint as a 'torch singer' in THE CHAM CHAM in Thunderbirds? Or the crazy 'We have a green light!' sequence from FLIGHT TO ATLANTICA in C. Scarlet.

Another Scarlet classic for me is the breaking through of the 'groovy' music in WHITE AS SNOW - you have to love that theme...

But the moments which made most impact in my formative years were the revelations of the concealed SPVs in the original Captian Scarlet. Revisiting them in my 'grown up' years I was surprised to find that there were far fewer than I remembered.

Vivid imagination? :)

Never had one single TV 21 comic as a kid, what an upbringing eh. :p

I too have copies the recent hardback reprint books, and yes I am looking forward to Vol 3 later this year, plus other reprint book from a few years ago, the Classic Comic Strips book by Graham Bleatheman and Sam Denham, (our very own Air Terranian).

I also have digital copies of the entire TV 21 run start to finish, but its not the same as having them in your hands, mind you not having to buy the comic has saved me Lord alone know's how much money based on the prices they go for these day's.

Is it permissable to post links to the digital copies of TV Century 21 and Contdown/TV Action? So that other fans have missed out can view them.

You would have to join the PROJECT_21_Plus_90 group, but I do not see why a link to them should hurt, they may well appreciate the new members.

Down side is that you are probably going to have to trawl through the replies to find some of the links to the comics.

I believe that the comics are now on another website, as i am not a member of Project 21. I got them from this other website and was lead to believe they were posted there by a either the owner or a member of Project 21.
I won't post anything until i know the other site is legit.

Its been quite a while since I downloaded anything to be honest, in fact I was still at work last time I downloaded stuff, and I was made redundant at the end of April.

So its entirely possible that the 'shades' have another location for the comic downloads. I keep 'nipping' on the Project 21 forum if I am informed by e-mail of any new threads that have any useful news in them, but other than that I don't usually bother too much.

I think i will wait until i hear from someone with links to Project 21,as i would not want to harm sales of the books of reprints. :)

Sorry i hi-jacked this thread, i will start another for TV Century 21

I think UFO's "TIMELASH" was probably one of the BEST shows Gerry ever did in his whole career, bar none! An excellent episode, and for TV, I don't think anyone could have produced a better show. A major highlight of Gerry's work.

Not a ton of hardware, but the show had pace, action, suspense, and it held your attention throughout the entire episode, keeping viewers glued! That's called pure entertainment! Excellent work!

On the subject of magic moments, i came across this artwork by Daryl Joyce of the opening moments of Trapped in the Sky.
Got to admit its VERY nice!

I also came across this painting of Captain Black from the Scarlet opening credits. I don't know who the artist is, but if you do, let me know so i can credit him. (I think it might be by Daryl Joyce as well, im just not certain)

Yes, they are on a different website, but not all. Because of the publications of the new volumes with comics uploads are on hold as far as I know.

Never had one single TV 21 comic as a kid, what an upbringing eh. :pI had exactly one. Why I was allowed to buy and keep that one remains a mystery. Another one that I bought was returned to the shop by my angry parents...

The 'we have a green light' quote has gone into our family's list of sayings. If I go into a hotel room my husband waits in the doorway until I've said it. And on this forum, it's not that I'm potty!

I think that Trapped In The Sky (The Rescue) is the best bit of THUNDERBIRDS:D
