That was the re-shoot. The first time round the Eagle was too obvious and had to be hidden more. There was also a ship from Alien in there too. SFX technicians like to throw in little in-jokes like that but they have to be very careful due to licencing problems. The Tardis was also in one other effects shot, different episode though.

There was a massive one on Star Trek, I'll find and post at some point...

Eagles have also popped up in Futurama, most recently in the Legoland spoof in the latest series of shows.

It's possible that it could be a piece of the Eagle. It is normal for them to use scrapped props like this. I favorite is in Beneath the Planet of the Apes...when Brent's ship is crashed. You can see clearly that part of the wreckage is the landing gear of the Jupiter Two.

It wasn't an original Eagle prop in Red Dwarf, just the Airfix kit.
As a side note Derek Meddings actually did a couple of effects shots on series 2 of Dwarf.

Crumbs, that's a new one on me! Could you elaborate on that story a bit Mark? Like who, how, when, where and why?! :)

I knew that I wasn't dreaming here's a quote from the Futurama fansite:
An Eagle Transporter from Space 1999 appears in the Futurama episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" as the ship that jettisons the last Star Trek videotapes onto a forbidden planet. And early in the third movie of the direct to video, fifth-season episode "Bender's Big Game", a heavily-armoured Meccano like Eagle is one of the combatants in a Demolition Derby alongside the Lego style Planet Express ship.
Somebody over the pond must be a fan!

In the 1980s Derek was with the Magic Camera Company doing some motion control type stuff for various productions. I think one of his shots was in the episode Kryten, where the camera skims the surface of the moon to the wrecked spaceship. The Dwarf DVDs have plenty of extras one of which is uncut sfx footage - I think one shot starts with a clapperboard with his name/company on it.
Going back to the 1960s, I'm still slightly surprised that the Century 21 effects studio was just disbanded after UFO and that Gerry didn't try to keep it on as an independant effects facility. Apparently they were often asked to do other peoples special effects, although in the end they only did shots for 2 films, 'Up Pompeii' and Roger Moores 'Crossplot'.

I believe quite a few people at the Century 21 effects studio tried to convince ATV to keep the facility going, but were told 'There is no future in science fiction' !

Also IIRC there was an Eagle Spacecraft on the shelves of Comic Book Guy in the Simpsons on an episode but I cant remember which one.

Heh, I just imagine in later years that the powers that be at ATV wish they had had the use of a crystal ball, they got that wrong or what, big style. :(
