22. DUEL

The stark shadows, low horizon and black and white landscape make the Moon a dramatic location.

STORY
1. NCS HALL OF FAME

You can read a synopsis of this story at the following location: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Gerry_Anderson%27s_New_Captain_Scarlet_epi sodes

The highlighted main characters appear in ‘Duel'.

2. CAPTAIN BLACK’S REPORT

This is a most unusual episode to review. My impression is that there are 2 completely separate scripts here and that, at the last minute, they have been cleverly joined together by a section inserted in the middle.

Not only that, but in the first half there is extensive reuse of existing locations, sets and vehicles which have already appeared in other episodes. It could therefore be that the first half is basically padding to flesh out a storyline that doesn't really kick in until we reach the Moon.

I find it hard to swallow that the Mysterons have somehow arranged for some Earth crooks to stage a fake handover of a deadly 'nerve agent' in return for a suitcase full of dollars as a 'decoy'. Not only that but Spectrum have been tipped off to use a satellite telescope to witness these phoney goings-on on top of a skyscraper which would otherwise have been invisible if done in a room.

Once on the Moon, Black swiftly confirms the impossibility of releasing nerve agents in so many closed environments. His plan was always to get hold of a Bison and use it to destroy all Earth bases on the Moon. Unless I hear otherwise, I will continue to regard this as a 'cut-and-shut' episode like when the front and back halves of different written-off cars have been welded together and sold to an unsuspecting member of the public!

I applaud the reuse of existing props and would suggest this episode is the nearest we get in NCS to rehashing old footage in the way of 'Aquanaut of the Year' (Stingray), 'Security Hazard' (Thunderbirds), 'The Inquisition' (Captain Scarlet) and 'The Birthday' (Joe 90).

This screenshot is from 'Duel'. Compare it to the scene from 'Skin Deep' a few frames below.

This is the same side road that appears in the episode called 'Skin Deep'. The artist and genius, Herr Janus, has his laboratory in the buildings on the left side of the street at the far end. The White Team have now put up a shutter and an '8 Day Sale' sign on his premises which you glimpse for a moment.

'Denim' escapes on a motorbike having just kicked open the door of a building on the right of the street. Clearly, this is a very bad neighbourhood and any prospective buyer of Herr Janus's property should probably give it a miss! The blue car is the same model that is driven by Astrid Winters into the loch in 'The Achilles Messenger'.

There's a nice exchange between Blue and Ochre as the motorcyclist escapes down a link road:
BLUE: "He's getting away."
OCHRE: "No, he thinks he's getting away." Feisty!

3. GUEST ARTISTS

Despite my reservations about why the Cairo scene was even necessary, I really like the intensity and earnestness of Zuca's confrontation with Scarlet. I didn't guess that this was another Mike Hayley voice performance but well done (again) to him.

I like some of the humorous comments in the following abridged conversation:

SCARLET: "You double-crossed me, Zuca."
ZUCA: "The sun, it has made you crazy."
SCARLET: "So, how come I had to chase you all the way back to your ancestors?"
ZUCA: "I... I thought you were someone else."
SCARLET: "Someone else dressed in scarlet? You've gotta be kidding. Do you know what they're gonna hit?"
ZUCA: "The Moon! The vacation complex."

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=860
ZUCA: "I... I thought you were someone else." SCARLET: "Someone else dressed in scarlet? You've gotta be kidding."

Scarlet's behaviour in the desert is completely out of character for him. Although on the much faster Raid Bike, Scarlet still fires a missile at Zuca who is only in a jeep. He then pulls a gun out and threatens to shoot Zuca and even blows up his vehicle with a shot to the petrol tank.

I think this 'in your face' dialogue is yet another device for smoothing over the very forced join between the nerve agent storyline and the almost unrelated second storyline with Black using the arsenal of weapons in the Bison to destroy the Moon's installations.

4. CHARACTERISATION AND VOICE WORK

Apart from Zuca, who is now a Mysteron replicant, the main villain in this story is Captain Black. He goes through his usual repertoire and, like all true baddies, gives Scarlet enough time to save the day by taking a few seconds to explain his plans. Rather than show another picture of Conrad I have opted for the following screenshot which is, or could have been, much more interesting.

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=862
Unless these are special tan-thru bikinis I don't think the girls are going to get much of a tan.

5. VEHICLES AND TECHNOLOGY

Normally, I am not a great lover of the Bisons. I think this began with “Instrument of Destruction” when I saw the great metal wheels crush some rocks into dust – I wanted the Bisons to have nice planet-friendly Goodyear or Michelin tyres! Incidentally, I feel sure that the aforementioned rock crushing was a deliberate way of signalling to the viewer that the Earth astronauts could be perceived as being unwelcome.

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=861
BLACK: "Now to cure my scarlet fever!" It was great to have a fight between Black and Scarlet using the 2 Bisons.

6. MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS

This episode seems unusual in that there are 2 passages of music specially written for it. The music for both the Bison Battle and Tranquility (my preferred spelling) can be found on Crispin Merrell's website: http://www.toomanynotes.co.uk/music.html

'Tranquility' is unremarkable background music but 'Bison Battle' is quite striking. Perhaps the latter should have been a little louder during the duel on the Moon.

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=864
"You say TRANQUILLITY and I say TRANQUILITY." Apparently both are correct but LL doesn't look right to me!

The music for both the helicopter and motorcycle chases was somewhat predictable and formulaic. Heaven knows how many shots that bad guy had to fire before incapacitating the skyriders.

7. LOCATIONS, SETS AND LIGHTING

I thought that the Bison duel on the Moon was fantastic. In particular, I really liked the stark black-and-white lighting of the lunar landscape. I guess there are few shades of grey because of the absence of an atmosphere. I also enjoyed the low horizons which must be due to the smaller size of the Moon compared to the Earth.

Now we come to the reuse of locations and vehicles.

LOCATIONS:
Backstreet from 'Skin Deep' where Herr Janus works (see below).
Motorway from 'Touch of the Reaper'.
New York skyline including river and bridges from 'The Achilles Messenger'.
Maybe the desert from 'Mercury Falling' but very hard to say!

VEHICLES:
Red sports car from 'Contact'.
Blue sports car and motorcycle from 'The Achilles Messenger'.
Mrs Mackenzie's car from 'Trap for a Rhino'.
Hydra Laboratories transporter from 'Rain of Terror'.

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=863
This screenshot taken from 'Skin Deep' shows that the same backstreet has been reused in 'Duel'.

I am a big fan of the concept of reusing sets and props. In the case of Captain Scarlet and Joe 90 it was pleasing, for example, to see the same operating theatre being used in both series. Similarly, the ITC series 'Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)' and 'Department S' were made at the same time and shared sets and vehicles.

It is part of the fun of Cult TV to try and spot these economies. It is too late now but I reckon it might have been possible to squeeze a third 'Series' of 13 episodes of New Captain Scarlet by extensive reuse of existing props.

8. MOTION CAPTURE

Generally, the Motion Capture seems to be fine although this story contains the worst case of "Rubbery Legs" that I have ever seen.

SUMMARY

9. OVERALL COMMENTS

This is a curious episode bringing together action from 3 very different locations – New York, Egypt and the Moon. I know from other threads that many viewers found the skyrider/helicopter flying sequences between the skyscrapers exhilarating but I found them almost tedious – Sorry!

The script for this episode does seem to be all over the place. We spend most of the first half chasing a canister of laughing gas but then Zuka says this was just a decoy because the real target was the lunar holiday resort. Then, when Black appears he says that there was little use for a nerve agent on the Moon either and that he had only wanted to get his hands on a Bison!

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=865
I think this is the regular guest Mysteron, 'Colonel Walter', now playing the part of a human!

10. EPISODE RATING

Rating 3 out of 5

TRIVIA

11. “I GUESSTIMATE THE PYRENEES” (Plot Accelerators)

I suppose that Zuca is a sort of catalyst and plot accelerator in that he is the person who connects the first part of the show about the nerve agent with the second part about destruction of the Moon's human bases.

12. “WHAT ABOUT SCARLET?” (Other Captains do some work)

Both Scarlet and Blue take a very active part in the helicopter chase through New York. Both Skyriders are hit by gunfire and Blue ends up crashing through the windows of a glass skyscraper where he apologises to Victoria, Colonel White's daughter, or more likely a Repertory Company clone.

13. “THEY NOT ONLY FIGHT IN THE SHADOWS BUT MARSHALL THOSE SHADOWS AGAINST US” (The latest Mysteron powers)

Apart from Black, the only replicant is Zuca and we don't seem him being Mysteronised although we do see him deconstruct into green vapours.

14. “MY INDESTRUCTIBLE BUTT” (Scarlet defies death)

During the helicopter chase, Scarlet's Skyrider is hit but he manages to leap onto the helicopter and overpower the occupants as his Skyrider crashes into the river below. Later he is involved in the Bison Battle but although he sets his red/scarlet Bison to 'self-destruct' mode he ejects before it collides with Black's yellow/ochre Bison.

15. “GO OUT THERE AND GET IT BACK!” (Damage and destruction of Spectrum property)

2 Skyriders are destroyed in the first half and 2 Bisons in the second half. At least the red Bison is disintegrated but see my comments below regarding the yellow Bison.

16. “WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY” (Nods to other films and shows)

I can't think of any cross-references.

17. MONKEY MAN AND FRIENDS (NCS Repertory Company)

In my opinion, the helicopter pilot shown above is one and the same as 'Colonel Walter'. Colonel Walter is a Mysteron who appears several times during the series as the leader of the Vampire pilots whenever there is a dogfight with the Angels. He is thus an important member of the Repertory Company.

The cool looking dude in the grey pinstripe suit who wears glasses is also a guest on Airforce One in the episode, 'Touch of the Reaper'. 'Denim', the motorcyclist who trades with 'grey suit' is seen briefly in the episode, 'Storm at the End of the World'.

18. RUBBERY LEGS AND FACELIFTS (Dodgy key-framing and other anomalies)

Zuka has the worst 'rubbery legs' of any character in any episode! To reiterate, what I mean by this is that his legs and trousers seem to be animated as a single item. The overall effect is very unrealistic and makes him seem as if he has been filmed in stop motion and that his legs are made of rubber with bendable thick wire to adopt the poses.

I have not included a photo of Ava Gordon, the Administrator of Tranquillity, because she has that unconvincing, ghostly generic look like Dr King's wife and also Colonel White's wife.

'Grey pinstripe' has got a most unusual suit - I don't think the tailor has finished making it yet! If you check out this scene you will see that sometimes the suit seems to be made like a patchwork quilt but this is maybe the best overall picture.

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=866
Talk about a sharp suit - this one's got slash marks on it!

19. LOOSE ENDS

According to Captain Blue, both Ochre and Magenta went through the wreckage of the yellow Bison with a 'fine tooth comb' to try and find any trace of Captain Black. What a load of bull! If you check out the footage where Scarlet crashes his red Bison - set to self-destruct - into the yellow Bison you will see that the latter is virtually undamaged. You wouldn't need to do any 'sifting' - just open the door and look inside.

It amuses me that the camera work does its best to hide the fact that the yellow Bison is undamaged. As it slides down the hill slope, Scarlet's escape pod blocks your view of the vehicle by coming to rest directly in front of the line of sight. Shortly after, when Scarlet gets to his feet the camera is deliberately panned away from the yellow Bison. The 'lie' is perpetuated by Scarlet apparently not noticing Black's vehicle or even thinking to ask about Conrad's fate!

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/forum/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=867
The yellow Bison looks to be in one piece to me - it should be easy to find Black if he's in it!

20. BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT! (In-jokes)

In this episode, the yellow and red Bisons looked terrific, especially with the harsh lighting. There were plenty of dust trails but I have no doubt that the Team would have liked to have put in proper tracks, both on the Moon and for the vehicles back in Cairo. I feel sure that they ran out of time on this episode.

21. SPECTRUM GOODIE BAG (Colour coordinated bling!)

You could hardly fail to notice that both Serena and Destiny were wearing colour coordinated bikinis. The concept of colour-coded Bisons seems way over the top but there they were! Scarlet also has a scarlet Raid Bike (you can see that he is using Blue's Raid Bike in the above shot from 'Skin Deep').

22. EPISODE DIRECTOR DOM LAVERY'S COMMENTS (Replies to my posts on the excellent Spectrum Headquarters Forum)

Another chance to read Dom Lavery's detailed and informative posts in reply to my questions on the Spectrum Headquarters Forum. http://www.spectrum-headquarters.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/index.php

DOM'S COMMENTS

As with all the the shows that had the Bison on mars, we did not get tracks behind them. This was a particular bugbear of mine. We did do a number of tests, successful tests, but it took to long and the render time was just to high. In Duel, I saw an amazing test for tracks left on the Luna surface. It was very exciting, but however was also to time consuming. (It was great to see the tracks left behind the vehicles in Storm at the end of the world. It added a great level of realism.)

Conrad Lefkon, excellent review and analysis of NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET episode 22 "Duel". One thing that you have proven in all your extremely thorough reviews is that NCS is an excellent remake of the original CS.

Agreed another solid review.

The Bison battle for me is my favourite moment of the series, there hasn't been anything quite like it in film or tv.

Thanks Steve and Chrisof :)

I have really enjoyed doing these reviews as it forces me to look more deeply at the production than would otherwise be the case. The music and, more particularly, the sound effects are the areas where I would like to have provided a better analysis.

Out of interest, i cant help noticing we are running out of NCS episodes, any plans after your finished, maybe trying another show perhaps? They do help you look at a lot of things more closely.

They're good reviews, if you write them, ill read them :)

Hello Chrisof,

How about it 'Deep Folly' - the Remoments of Matthew Harding? ;)

Of corpse, for the clarificapers this is a refer-it to The 'Secret Service' of that.
