A few years ago Network released in England SPACE:1999 - Year 1 on DVD. Year 2 should follow soon, but the DVDs are still not coming. What happened???

No idea at all to be honest, there is no news or sign of them at this point, if they ever planned to release them that is.

Hi,

It was posted as a pre-order on Amazon.co.uk a couple of years ago and then it was pulled. Contacted Network sales last Nov. and they said they didn't know about it, but they would let the PTB know there was interest. So e-mail them and let them know you're an interested customer. Perhaps that will help to speed things up.

I've e-mailed Network a couple of times on this and always get the standard "all our future releases are covered by a confidentiallity clause" that told me nothing.

So glad I got the Carlton set when I did.

I got the same mail by Network. Not very nice... :(

Same here - have actually had it pre-ordered and then canceled twice by Amazon UK. I have the Carlton Season 2 discs but wow, the Network versions of Season 1 look so much better! Sent emails to Network at various times and guess I will continue to, but I can only afford to buy one...

Network have a habit of announcing new releases and then cancelling or postponing them. They are getting as bad as Product Enterprise/1612 Collectables or whatever their name is this week.

I really loved the season 1 set from Network... so I'll be very forgiving about not releasing season 2. Especially because season 2 is horrible compared to season 1 anyway. But what I would really like to see is a blu-ray release of season 1... now that they have remastered the whole thing in high-def. Hopefully this is going to happen soon... and U.F.O. too, please.

This is the old boring Year 1 vs. Year 2 discussion.

I also want to have Year 2 from Network in my collection. The Year 1 DVD release by Network was really great!!!
And I also want to have the four compilation movies (ALIEN ATTACK, JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN, DESTINATION MOONBASE ALPHA, COSMIC PRINCESS) as digital remastered DVDs in my collection!

I mentioned it to them earlier this year and they said it was still in the pipeline and was expected at some point.
Unfortunately we are not privilaged to the behind-the-scenes goings on, there could well be a high financial cost to doing this show, legal hold-ups or that ITC/Granada are not letting them do it.
The XL5 release is partly because ITC are more willing to let them have the old stuff.

Maybe because when Network do get around to releasing Year 2, most of the episodes will have isolated scores. :)

You can still buy the Carlton Series 2 boxset completely new if you don't mind having the Region 4 version.

I recently bought the set new and sealed from eBay for £35 (already imported from Australia). If you don't mind waiting a couple of weeks you can get it for around £20 (including postage) from somewhere like the DVD Warehouse in Australia.

Please note that the actual disks appear virtually identical to the Region 2 release but they are not in 6 separate boxes but are all held in a single multi-disk pack. This sounds a bit crude but I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the pack as they have used a clever method which protects the disks very well.

The quality is pretty good and I have had no difficulty running them on both my TV/DVD player and also on my PC. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I particularly like The Beta Cloud because the monster in it is so absurd. It reminds me of that weird creature in one of the Fireball episodes (Space Monster) with the sharp pointy teeth and the gun that fires clouds of gas!

I'd like to add something here.
I used to work in Blackwell's Friar Street Bookshop in Reading [now closed, sadly!] which was the companies specialist Sci Fi book shop.
Part of my job was to order DVDs for the shop, along with any Anderson related items. Part of my job remit was to source new and forthcoming releases.
Some time after year one came out, customers would ask for year 2, so I contacted Network directly. I was told that after all the work [money, we assume] was put into remastering series one, the sales were, "quite frankly, disappointing" and series two would probably not see the light of day, due to the lack of return on sales of series one...

It would seem the extras disc is the same as the Network boxed set as it has exactly the same runnig time of 163 mins.
Hopefully the other six discs in the set will include the isolated scores.
The main part of the extras disc is a re-editted version of Tim Malletts Space 1999 documentary. You should also track down the DVD of his full versions of the UFO and Space 1999 documentaries as they are both excellent.

I think the price for Network's Year 1 was to high (90 GBP). In Australia the Beyond Home Entertainment's DVD set only costs 29.97 Australian Dollar = 16.32 British Pound.

I wonder if the Australian release is the same as the British Network release? Who knows more?

Two episodes of Network's SPACE:1999 (BREAKAWAY and DRAGON'S DOMAIN) do not include an isolated music track. I hope the Australian release will include the missing soundtracks...

Ekkie, as i mentioned above i am cetain that the Australian Space 1999 boxset is going to be identical to the Network set(cover art and menus will probably be different.)
The isolated scores for Breakaway and Dragon's Domain are not 'missing'. There simply wasn't room on the disc for 1) original mono, 2) 5.1 re-mix, 3) audio commentary or isolated score, something had to go.
But i do agree that they should have picked two other episodes as the two stated have very good scores.

Also alot of die-hard Space fans want the mono soundtracks especially after the way carlton have messed up on 5.1 soundtracks with Thunderbirds and The Prisoner in the past.

Thanks, but the information is not new for me. If someone wants mono, these people should buy the old Carlton DVDs.
The DD 5.1 remix of THUNDERBIRDS was not good, because it was only blown-up-mono. If you want to make a nice DD 5.1 sound from mono, you only can do it with much work and you need the original 24-track-tapes from the sound studio.
The DD 5.1 remastered JAMES BOND classics are also great, and I think Network has done great work for SPACE:1999.
By the way, the first SPACE:1999 films in stereo were the movie compilations JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN and COSMIC PRINCESS.

This is true is Space had been recorded on 24 track tapes, but it wasn't. Space's music was recorded on 4 track tapes and 35mm sep-mags for sound effects and dialogue. These were mixed to 16mm sep-mag tapes for the master soundtracks.
Journey Through the Black Sun and Cosmic Princess are also only in linear stereo and the source prints they used were very poor indeed.

PS Some of the DTS mixes on the Bond films leave alot to be desired as well!

Speaking personally - and sorry if this upsets you Ekkie - I'd rather have the soundtracks in mono, or at least not in 5.1 (or faked-up stereo). However well they're done (and they're frequently not well done) they don't really sound right.

The way to listen to the music is to listen to the CDs - the fact they're not complete isn't in my opinion enough of an excuse to start messing with what was the original soundtrack on the DVD. If there is music missing from the CDs (as we know there is, for several reasons), I'm not sure that 'new' soundtracks on DVDs are going to be a proper substitute.

It's all very well quoting the Bond films, but the budgets for these DVD projects are many many times the budgets which are available for restoring ITC series on DVD. Network did a fantastic job overall on the Series One restoration and the many extras considering they probably had a limited budget.

As Silent Bob says: it's not a perfect world.

James Bond does it better!

The same problem have the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA DVDs, although two movies (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and MISSION GALACTICA: THE CYLON ATTACK) had in cinema great Sensurround sound...

I think the 3-D-sound (VHS tapes) was sometimes better in the SPACE:1999 compliation movies than in the Network DVDs. But only sometimes...

And on the DVD releases of the compilation movies in Holland, Portugal, France and Italy is the original stereo sound (from VHS) missing; so only mono downmixes, very sad...

I sometimes think we get spoilt too much by companies such as Network. It is so easy to go out and buy just about any classic film or television programme you remember from your youth.
Back in the late 70s and early 80s hunting down your favourite show was almost akin to searching for the Holy Grail.
Making contacts with people in Australia, Canada, USA etc to try and get hold of 4th or 5th generation VHS's of UFO or Doctor Who or Timeslip.
Perhaps the thrill of the chase of an elusive title was half the fun. But now i tend to very grateful for what we do get, and try not to complain to much to the hard working people at BBC Worldwide or Network.

Really? Is this the Magma Pacific set? I know it was rereleased in March of 09 in a slimline box set with the actors on the dvds. Or has there been another release in Oz? I was under the impression the Magma Pacific set was a re-packaging of the Carlton set.

Don't hold your breath for a Bluray of UFO - not a decent one anyway.
ITV have already had HD masters of UFO done but they have removed 1/3 of the image for 16:9 like they did with Thunderbirds . Network rather sensibly ensured that 4:3 versions of Space 1999 were also done for their dvd restoration.

You can still buy the Carlton Series 2 boxset completely new if you don't mind having the Region 4 version.

I got the Australian Region 4 set off ebay brand new for £20 delivered about a year ago and all 6 discs were identical to the Carlton ones and each was in its own individual case. The main difference was the Carlton outer box was a very sturdy one and the Magna Pacific one was very flimsy.

I do not want to have mono tracks, because DD 5.1 is much better. And I want to have isolated music tracks, because the soundtrack CDs from Fanderson and SilvaScreen are incomplete...

Most fans want to hear the show as it was made. Any 5.1 remix is a fake as the show was only ever made in mono.
Another good reason to include the mono is because so many remixes turn out like the 5.1 sound on Networks 40th Anniversary dvd of The Prisoner - absolutely dreadful.(the Bluray version is much better).
However - the 5.1 mixes on Space 1999 are excellent but its nice to have the mono too

I think, the sound of Network's SPACE:1999 is very good, but not excellent. But I often miss real 3-D-sound, I want to hear an Eagle flying through my livingroom!!!

Just to go off topic briefly, MISSION GALACTICA was not released with SENSURROUND. It was developed for the film EARTHQUAKE using large low frequency speakers placed in selected theatres. But was only used on three other films MIDWAY, ROLLERCOASTER and the first BATTLESTAR GALACTICA film. The system was quickly dropped because it was found to be damaging the building structure, making theatre goers sick and passing the frequencies into ajoining theatres.
