I'm currently going through the Fireball XL5 episodes again and a thought has occurred to me. Why was Gerry Anderson never credited as a voice artist when he of course provided the voice of Robert the Robot (plus a few guest robots as for example in "The Granatoid Tanks" and "Trial By Robot").

Perhaps it would have caused difficulties with the actor's union, Equity, who may have regarded Gerry as 'scab labour'. Having said that, I'd be surprised if Sylvia was ever a member!

I believe Sylvia was at one time a member of the Screen Writers' Guild, so no reason why she shouldn't also have been a member of Equity, though I've no knowledge that she definitely was. I think she was involved with a campaign to get the voice artists repeat fees during the 90s, and this may have been with some union involvement.

It would be interesting to find out why his name wasn't credited at the end of the programme. Thanks for your suggestions.:)

I am reading the Filmed in Supermarionation book now...they make the comment, and seemed to stress it, that even though he mouthed the words, he actually didn't provide the voice...It was that machine for those with their larynx removed. So maybe they felt it would have been an un due credit. That's the only thing I can figure.

It was most difficult to create the H sound which is why Robert is famously heard saying "On our way 'ome!" He must have also used the same technique in creating the other robot voices in the two episodes I mentioned at the start of the thread. I did actually see that reference in the Supermarionation book so it's got me scratching my head a bit on this one.
