Space: 1999 - still clearly the best production
Captain Scarlet - still serious
Terrahawks - watchable lightweight & funny
Thunderbirds - still great, but bit slow now
NCS - new'ish so feels fresh
Space Precinct - entertaining in it's way
UFO - class, but dated and bit slow now
Fireball - still has charm
Stingray - nice music
Joe 90 - quality show, but still worry about his feet being able to reach the pedals of each vehicle he drives!

My top 5 would have to be.....
1. UFO
2. Captain Scarlet (classic).
3. Thunderbirds
4. Stingray
5. Space 1999

My favorites would be:
1. Space:1999. I particularly like year one, as I prefer the overall tone and look of the show. However I do enjoy year two as well, despite the somewhat juvenile nature of many of the stories and the overall slump in production values.
2. U.F.O. Although the look of the show is a bit dated and certain elements are now almost camp ( purple wigs, anyone? ). I thought that most of the stories were intelligent and held up well to close scrutiny.
Although I did not see many of the puppet series until more recently, I do have an interest in them and find several of them enjoyable However I am not what you would call an afficianado.

1] UFO. Now, just because my forum name may suggest this, it's because I'm actually a researcher and author into the "Genuine" UFO phenomenon!
2] Space:1999 year one. For the epic scale, and "2001" look. At the time, an accurate view of how space exporation might have been if NASA had carried on with the Apollo missions, and onto Mars.
3] Thunderbirds...cos well, it was the first real Anderson series I watched from new...way way back in '65!!!!

4 The Secret Service
5 Stingray
6 Supercar
7 Joe 90
8 Terrahawks
9 Four Feather Falls
10 Torchy The Battery Boy
That's my top 10. Captain Scarlet is just brilliant - I like the darker feel to the programme. Fireball XL5 is my favourite black and white show with that super theme tune and The Secret Service for its unique blend of Supermarionation and real life. A pity it was only seen in the ATV, Granada and Southern regions.

Here is my countdown:
1. Thunderbirds - I remember the huge publicity the series got when it was first broadcast. The sense of awe when Fireflash took off, with the flashing lights withdrawing into the runway, is hard to describe now. At the time it seemed like a wonderful vision of the near future.
2. Joe 90 - the first episode was terrible and Joe, himself, was annoying but the wide variety of stories and locations was inspired.
3. The Secret Service - Like many people, I didn't know this existed until it came out on tape. Again, a wide variety of situations and it inspired me to try and learn Unwinese (I used to correspond with Stanley).
4. Original Captain Scarlet - The first episode with the new style puppets was extraordinarily good. I remember there being a colour photo from Crater 101 on the front of our local newspaper (the Slough studios were in our area).
5. New Captain Scarlet - A tremendous lost opportunity that could have been the start of a whole wave of CGI shows. I corresponded at length with Dominic Lavery who was just great. Did you know that it was he who was rigged up with motion capture sensors for recording the Mysteron RAT?
6. Stingray - the best characterisation in any Anderson series. Troy, Phones, Atlanta, Shore and Fisher were wonderful 'people' although I didn't warm to Marina.
7. UFO - I just loved those sequences on Earth where you would have, say, Straker's car or a mobile driving down a dark road when it would be attacked by a UFO. Those wooded locations and tree-lined roads were just fantastic.
8. Terrahawks - If this had been filmed on 35mm rather than 16mm it would be much higher. A greatly underrated series.
9. Space 1999 Series 1 - Preposterous but impressive. Barbara Bain was great but the series was let down by unconvincing dialogue and amateurish performances by 'eye candy' extras. During life-threatening moments too many of these extras would be standing around like lemons.
10. Doppelganger - I am cheating by including this but I couldn't decide between Fireball and Supercar! Great performances by Ian Hendry and Patrick Wymark with a nice cameo by Herbert Lom. When Hendry was shaking hands with Wymark before getting ready to be blasted into space his face was almost grey with apprehension.

1. Space 1999 (Season 1) - Season 2 was awful!
2. U.F.O. (maybe it could have made the first spot, if it wasn't for those purple wigs)
3. New Captain Scarlet
4. Original Captain Scarlet
5. Thunderbirds (mostly because of the cool vehicles)

Its funny but at about the same time as the New Captain Scarlet was airing with its new designed Skybase. Doctor Who started and UNIT had the airborne carrier Valiant. Both are very similar, but which was designed first?
On another note, alot of the new Scarlet episodes were very good. But what disappointed me most was the very lack-luster opening and closing credits. Nothing memorable at all.

DOCTOR WHO Valiant had to be inspired by CAPTAIN SCARLET's Cloudbase & Skybase.

This week:
UFO
SPACE 1999
FIREBALL XL5
Ask me next week and I could have a totally different list. Gerry's shows are perfect for all manner of occasions and moods. Next time, I could put STINGRAY at the top because I'm in a 'Stingray mood'.

1. Space: 1999 (first series) - the most astonishing and mind-blowing tv series I've ever seen.
2. UFO - visually impressive, stylistically bonkers - but some cracking good human drama.
3. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons - very impressive for a kids puppet series - tense and hard-nosed action without the lapses into juvenile humour that affect many of the other shows.

Thunderbirds is undoubtedly the best of the bunch, with the earlier Stingray and XL5 next.
For me the darkness in Captain Scarlet made it less appealing.
That said, I've watched every show avidly.
