Hi there, I watched Terror in New York City on Blu-Ray last night. My first Blu-Ray!! I was really looking forward to it but found it hard to be see all these new glitches exposed and magnified –ugh! Derek Meddings wouldn’t be pleased.

Hey there, nice to meet you on here. I know what you mean...I felt the same way about Blu-Ray to start with. I think if you watch enough episodes you’ll start to enjoy spotting all the extra details. But yes, I wasn’t comfortable at first...

I was blown away when i first saw the Thunderbirds bluray - watching very closely, you can see the detail and imperfections in the models. In particular, in the episode '30 Minutes After Noon' I noticed part of the TB2 model is cracked... probably a result of a snapped wire, and then having a quick patch up in the workshop.

I'd have to check the DVD version to see if it's noticeable there too.

Still not sure about the 16:9 framing - i was horrified when i first heard about it, but actually, it works out ok as it helps to hide the puppet wires coming out of the heads! lol.

Is there a way for you guys to show some pictures of how it all looks. I haven't got a Bluray player yet but I'm awfully interested in how the models look in high definition :D

16:9 was a very crap idea in my head... most HD releases from old series are still 4:3... oh well.

i'm quite happy watching my Japanese laserdiscs of Stingray and Thunderbirds.
The programmes were not created to be examined in that much detail, why can't we do what we did years ago before DVD? Just sit back and enjoy the programmes.
Another thing i love about the Japanese discs is the packaging, they leave everything else dead in the water. I might be an old Luddite, but i know what i like. :)

P.S. i will never watch something in 16:9 that was filmed in 4:3.

Silent Bob, at first I felt the same as you about the Blu-Ray releases and the travesty of thecropped picture, but really they have done it for a good reason - to keep the show alive and relevant for today's market. The fact that they are continuing to tinker with the presentation of the show means that it is still alive and well and popular. It's when they stop tinkering that you have to worry, because that would mean that the chances of a new Thunderbirds series are pretty much nil... !

We've had one new Thunderbirds and look how that panned out! :(
Also look how George Lucas' continual tinkering has ruined the original Star Wars trilogy.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the new Thunderbirds box set wasn't released to please the loyal (but very small) number of fans in this country. They released it because they thought they could make more money out the show. On the one hand that's a cynical treatment of the series, but it means that there will almost certainly (I think) be a new Thunderbirds series one day - one specially suited to Blu-Ray & 16:9!!

I have to disagree. Most old episodes of series that were shot in 4:3 have stayed in 4:3. Just look at the old Batman series and Star Trek The Original Series.

On the other hand, I don't think I'd really mind everything being in full resolution. Seeing flaws in things doesn't make it less enjoyable for me. When I first saw the strings on Fireflash on DVD I was a bit iffy at first, but then I realized, well duh, what did I expect? that's how they did it!

the DVD capture I did myself, and the HD courtesy of a chap on eagletransporter.
I like the HD, as for me it helps with studying the images to work out kit parts etc for replicas although the DVD was a huge step from having to pause the VHS.

I dont think itll spoil it when watching as its all so quick, its easy to spot things when its paused or a screencapture.

most obvious is being able to read Thompson tower on the side of the helijet in the HD Shot and unreadable in the DVD shot, also shows how well the show was filmed.

The picture looks fantastic on these screenshots. I don't have Blu-ray yet. But any comments on the sound quality. Does it have the newer sound effects they added not so long ago? I do hope not. The worst thing about DVD releases of Thunderbirds so far.

Hi, I have only joined the forum tonight, but after watching 10 episodes of the Blu-Ray so far, Iam most impressed.

I have a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma, & have all the Anderson dvd boxsets.

The Blu-Ray picture & sound is first class.

Episodes do vary in quality, but as Thunderbirds was shot in 35mm & could be viewed at 1.85:1, cinema ratio, you soon get used to it.

Sure some of the frame is lost, but the fantastic picture quality makes up for this.

Sun Probe & Operation Crash Dive lokks good, as you are drawn into the frame better than the 4:3 version.

The Hd colourised version of Fireball XL5 is being released on Blu-Ray next month.

Only 1 episode, but seing the Network trailer it looks as if it will be excellent & 4:3 ratio.

I have had Blu Ray for some time but only got a HD tv last weekend so have been holdng off buying this because of all the horror stories on ratio!

Can anybody tell me what the sound is like in 5.1?

The mono Bonds were remixed in 5.1 but had the advantage of having stereo music masters at least but Thunderbirds doesnt and the 'stereo' dvds were a bit disapointing, explosions and a few bits of reverb to enhance the sound.

just wondered how they sounded through an full home cinema system
Thanks

On a similar note

Does anybody know if there are plans to release the twon 60s Thunderbirds feature films on Blu-Ray in the correct ratio? The DVD release was in 16:9 and the films were actually released in Super-Techniscope which is wider than Cinemascope.

I have the laserdisc releases from and they are correct so it wouldn't take much to do.
