Somthing i was thinking about in work...
I know its a tough question to answer without seeing the film but from the trailer, if a new Thunderbirds series was done in the style of Thunderbirds 2009 what would your thoughts be?
Pretty much as if it was done as a serious, live action, 50 minuite TV show like Doctor Who or rimeval.
Please feel free to be honest :)

Has been a while since any updates so just keeping everyone in the loop.
The film is in the process of being edited on the go, i keep adding more fx shots to add to the pace which is why its taking longer than expected. Filming wise, literally 3 shots of Guy will wrap the film, then its on for sound dubbing, and music.
Here some images, of TB3, her interior and the radically redesigned TB5, thaks to all for your patience. :)

Another quick update.
Production on the film was halted several months ago when our music computer exploded, after spending just under a thousand pounds on a shiny Mac i am pleased to announce that the last piece of the puzzle is now underway, i am not going to give a release date till the film is totally finished to be safe.
While i do believe this 15 minuite film shouldn't have taken a full year to make i'm almost glad we had the extra time, the editing has been tightened we have more facilities to mix the sound and several naff effects shots have been replaced with brand shiny new ones, along with several surprises and tonnes of Anderson references.
Guy is working like a trooper to get the score done an i am hoping (fingers crossed) we are looking at a release in the next few weeks.
Once again, a really big thank you for your patience :)
Also quite Understandably, the title has been changed.

Really, honestly im sure all of us deep down take our inspiration from the latest trends from Moonbase Alpha, we shall preform our next film in Pyjamas and Platforms.
"Runway 29" is a subtle reference to Trapped in the Sky, the site of IR's first official rescue hence "watch this Space" :)

Thunderbirds 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q72SF8ch6FA)
(Big long Speech below contains spoilers)
At long last i am pleased to announce the release of Thunderbirds 2010, this project started out as a short film idea to prove a point and has quickly spiralled out of control to become the most exciting project i have ever worked on, this is due majorly to the crew that banded together to make this film and theses people i would like to thank.
Guy Taylor has worked with me on many projects and personally i think he really went the extra mile on this one, as well as playing the part of Alan, when our music computer literally exploded he worked like clockwork to devise a new one, when we finally purchased a brand shiny new Mac he spent 2-3 weeks solid working on the score using unfamiliar equipment. The result is a great thematic score which gets you straight into the action.
JamesUk's sound packs made a fantastic addition to the film, having many of the original sound fx at our disposal helped bring a nostalgic feel into the film with doors buttons and craft sounding exactly as they should. The vast range of sound makes you feel every meteor hit, footstep and metal clang. I am really thankful he spent so long collecting these great clips.
Rachel Smith, my long suffering girlfriend created the great uniforms seen in the film, her eye for detail and research really improved the look right down to the Russian astronought having a PKA patch as opposed to a nasa one.
Andy, Pip, Rachele, Ross and Andrew, the films supporting cast who all had to put up with my irritating bossy direction while jumping around in unflattering blue jumpsuits for 4 hours in a church hall with pensioners watching us. Thank you for bearing with me.
As a director the most exciting addition to this film was the man with possibly the most epic voice in the universe stepping in to play the voice of Jeff Tracy, Shane Rimmer. Shane coming on the project really gave us that extra boost to go the extra mile for this film. I am really honoured by how professional he was when recording his lines (he did 25 takes on the opening prologue and nailed it 23 of those times), a true Gentleman.
All this wouldn't have been possible without Sam Denham who was instrumental in setting up our link with Shane but also Directing his sequences for me and lending his expert knowledge to help shape the film, for this i am eternally grateful.
Finally i would like to thank everyone on the forum for all your kind comments and giving us the urge to keep going, while i'm pretty sure this film shouldn't have taken over a year to make i do believe we got a better film as a result with the better equipment we acquired along the way.
I hope you enjoy the film and while watching please remember: Every single shot, patch, rivet, sticker, note, spaceship, chair and piece of duct tape etc was created from scratch by fans for fans :).

I would absolutely love a review, its always great to know what worked and what didn't, i would really appreciate it :)
As for a DVD release i may bring a few free copies to the con but as a fan film no money must be made from this, fan films kind of exist in a legal loophole, generally there allowed as it provides publicity.
As for a sequel it really depends if this film is successful, i do have a plot line in mind however :D.

Thanks for the kind words Chris - was more than happy to help out on a project that so brilliantly captured the essence of the original series and showed it could still work today with the latest techniques. Did Shane really do 25 takes for the opening sequence ? I had slightly lost count, but he was very patient, and also very keen to give the best performance possible given the limited time and recording facilities. I think his countdown is excellent as well - we tried very hard to summon up the spirit of Peter Dyneley for that.
I'm now waiting to see what happens to Ocean Pioneer Three...

Great work Chris & Guy, I really enjoyed it. The opening was pure fanboy stuff with Fireflash & other craft making cameo apperances. Nice one to Sam too for helping to get Shane Rimmer to do the voice over for the project. A nice team effort.

Chris,
You are an excellent director, to your cast(including you), crew, your costume designer girl friend
Rachel Smith and Shane Rimmer as Jeff Tracy(brilliant casting that you achieved) I salute you. This film might be short on length, but it is extremely long on content. In your fourteen minutes you have done more to continue the original Thunderbirds legacy. Chris your directing was suspense oriented, no scene was wasted. If Jonathan Frakes Thunderbirds 2004 movie had opened with the first fourteen minutes that you have created here, then it would have been a success like your Thunderbirds 2010 film. Director Chris Thompson FAB!

I have to say, that was just absolutely fantastic!
I must admit, i wasn't expecting much from a fan film... but it truly was superb, very entertaining, fun, good story, excellent effects, great soundtrack and works incredibly well.
It struck me almost as 'Thunderbirds: The Next Generation' - particularly with Shane Rimmer voicing the father, and the young heroes look and feel more real and believable. This just proves that, if done right, Thunderbirds could work as live action. Alan and Scott look real - they probably would be cool, have longer hair and have fashionable facial hair - unlike the perfect pretty boys in the Frakes film who had no personality. Shane Rimmer absolutely nailed the countdown (I loved the stereo effects btw), and his narration served as the perfect re-introduction to a new series. The opening effects sequences featuring familiar vehicles and scenes was nicely executed and a joy to watch (especially the little references and subtle nods to other series).
The special effects were excellent, and blended nicely with the live action. The weightlessness effects were really well done. The IR costumes are much more practical, but reflect the style of the original series.
The Thunderbirds vehicles themselves were spot on - some with subtle changes, others such as TB5 looks much more functional and believable, and the TB3 design is much improved (is this the same design as the movie version?) Tracy Island looked beautiful, I'd love to live there!
Great closing lines spoken by Rimmer. I love how you've cleverly connected the end to tie in with a sequel, and feel this would work well as a format for the series - with each episode ending on a cliffhanger, leading into next week's episode... that way, you HAVE to watch week after week to find out what happens! lol.
I loved the end credits - a nice modern take on the classic version.
The music worked extremely well throughout - the only thing i felt that was missing was a classic orchestral type score, particularity for the Thunderbirds march. I'd be interested to see a future special edition featuring newly performed Barry Gray scores with a full (electronic) orchestra!? lol.
Overall, I really thoroughly enjoyed this, so just wanted to congratulate you all on this wonderful achievement, and really hope Thunderbirds will be go again soon!
FAB!

FAB!

Thanks for such a wonderfully in depth review ill be passing it and the other comments to the team :). Glad some people are digging the hair (by far the most controversial aspect of the film).
For TB1 and 4 i started with the original and went forwards with TB3 i started with the basic shape of the movie one and went backwards, its very different in a lot of ways mainly the boosters and new intakes :)
I wanted the ship to feel big and cumbersome as opposed to fast and manoeuvrable in TB04 and im glad the mostly implied weightlessness went ok :D

Well Chris, I'll also admit that I wasn't expecting much from a fan film, but I bloody loved it! I think the cameo's of Seascape and Fireflash etc at the beginning worked very well, it's always good to recognise the original series. It's clear that a lot of hard work went into it, the SFX had a bit of a New Captain Scarlet feel too - I think that's a good thing!
I still can't believe you got Shane Rimmer on board! His "Thunderbirds Are Go!' line was spot on, and I know you've said that it shouldn't have taken as long as it did to make, but I think it's now clear that it was worth the extra time. It would be nice to think a film such as yours could influence someone at ITV to green-light a new series. At the very least, other future fan films have a new standard to match now.
Now, when can I audition to be in the sequel?:D

This made excellent viewing with some superb special effects. A highly polished production all round - well done Chrisof. Great to have Shane Rimmer involved as the voice of Jeff Tracy - what a coup. You make an excellent director too. 10 out of 10.:D
BTW I can't wait for the sequel!!:D

Really well done to you all. You were clever using the old sound effects meshed in with your modern take on the source materiel. That gave the film a god feel because there was a familiarity running through it. That was an aspect lacking from the Working Title attempt. I also enjoyed Alan's rubbish attempt to dock and then having to have a second go! ...Yeah, it ROCKED!!

...It struck me almost as 'Thunderbirds: The Next Generation' - particularly with Shane Rimmer voicing the father, and the young heroes look and feel more real and believable. This just proves that, if done right, Thunderbirds could work as live action. Alan and Scott look real - they probably would be cool, have longer hair and have fashionable facial hair - unlike the perfect pretty boys in the Frakes film who had no personality. ...
FAB!
Ross
Ross, you have perfectly pointed out the genius of Chris' THUNDRERBIRDS 2010 film. The writing and portrayal of both Alan and Scott has made the characters real believable people. Unlike the Ken doll two-dimensional Tracy brothers from the failed Jonathan Frakes 2004 film. The original THUNDERBIRDS Supermarionettes were more believable than the 2004 Tracy brothers.

Colonel Foster,
Absolutely agree with you. I love that example. Chris was brilliant to write and portray the scene with "Alan's rubbish attempt to dock and then having to have a second go". That is pure genius because we can all relate to that, Chris has made the characters human believable, so very real. That is what was missing from the two dimensional Tracy brothers of the Jonathan Frakes 2004 movie.

Review of Thunderbirds fanfilm
The first thing I noticed was the excellent music! The dark screen was very atmospheric with the moving stars. Lovely Credits!
And Earth – that is so beautiful. Shane Rimmer’s voice – at first I didn’t recognise it, probably because I was not expecting it. I just heard this fabulous, rich voice, evocative and so reminiscent of Jeff Tracy, but with much more depth. What an inspired choice of narrator!
I loved the segue to ‘the new golden age’ and the sight of the city; Fulmar Finance.. haven’t I seen that somewhere before! (Little touches like that are so important!) The ocean at sunset with the oil rig, and the aircraft (Fireflash?) A superb selection of visual images in very different tones of colour – grey misty city, dark ocean, bright blue skies for the aeroplane and over it all Shane’s voice giving us the necessary background information, bringing the viewer up-to-date with the era.
More superb images, venturing out into the Solar System, the Monorail, the deep sea vessel – what a lovely underwater effect there!
Then the disasters! The range of effects here is staggering! Excellent explosions and sound effects. Brought to mind the Frank Bellamy illustrations!
And we are only 1 minute 35 seconds into the film!
The first view of Tracy Island is breathtaking, not just for its accuracy, but also the fact that we know we are on safe ground here. No silly ‘Frakes-style’ attempt to distort a much-loved ideal, instead we are going to be treated to a true vision of Thunderbirds. And then .. Thunderbird 1 flashes towards us.
Perfect. Relax everyone. This is going to be great.
Then just what I was hoping to see...Thunderbirds are Go. Superb shots of TB1 flying past, and the dark screen to 5,4,3,2,1,
Yes, the craft have been slightly updated and streamlined, but boy, they are as beautiful as ever, if not more so for having been lovingly ‘restored’.
Wow. Thunderbird 1 blasts off..... takes me back to being a child and watching it for the first time. I was so pleased you used Thunderbirds sign with the lightning flash. What a great beginning!
The actual story gets underway very rapidly, and the detail on the Atlantic Base Surface Launching Platform is incredible. The ripples on the water, the little additional details underneath the platform, which could have been missed out, and don’t get much attention anyway. But it’s those details that make an image believable.
A very dramatic lift off – perhaps the exhausts from the engines coming out on either side is a little too symmetrical, and dark, but that is a very minor point. Again, very atmospheric and appropriate music, not too overpowering, just setting the scene.
I loved the shot of the rocket arcing into the sky – again, little details make such a difference... the different cloud layers, and the gradually expanding cloud of smoke.. beautiful.
What a wonderful shot of Earth in the very corner of the screen, complete with atmosphere. And then ISS? Looks like ISS!
That would have been an excellent shot by itself, but there is so much extra detail on the Earth below – cloud layers, sunshine etc. . Wonderful.
The asteroid hitting the station is incredible! The attention to detail is phenomenal...Did you film this in space?! Again.. compliments to the musical director!
There are some tremendous effects; the solar panels slowing moving, the spinning debris the torch floating in free fall ( reminiscent of the pen in 2001!), the airlock closing.
I did find it a little difficult hearing what the first astronaut was saying, but the synch is not quite perfect and maybe my speakers are not as good as they could be, but after that there was not of a problem. The astronauts speak just a little too quickly at times though.
The shot of the three astronauts looking through the viewport is truly wonderful....isolates them and makes the viewer aware of exactly where they are and what could happen to them. It was one of those ‘WOW’ moments in the film... (last time I thought that was when I saw the Enterprise orbiting a planet in the last Star Trek film! And that was done by a professional team of experts!)
And what do they see.. and what do we see..
Boy, although she is my least favourite Thunderbird, she looked glorious. Sunlight gleaming on her sides, lettering clear and readable, and over it all, as she powers to the rescue, the music, cheery and heroic at the same time.
Everything is going to work out!
I’ll continue this review later... if you’d like me to! It’s just quite long! And I haven’t managed to do it all yet!

I thought that too the first time I watched it, but subsequent viewing made me thing that the exhaust gases are actually pouring out of blast ducts beneath the platform, which would explain the concentration and symmetry of the smoke. Am I right?

Chris, I have to compliment the production design of your THUNDERBIRDS 2010 film. All of the Thunderbirds T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, Mole, FAB Rolls Royce(as you promised "no Ford") and Tracy Island(glimpses) as brilliant. The International Rescue uniforms worked out with costume designer girl friend Rachel Smith(as you proudly credited) are sharp looking. All these slight revisions are 100% complimentary of the original 1965-67 TV series, 1966 movie and 1968 movie...changed for the better not the worse as we saw in (yes, again) the Frakes 2004 movie mistakes. Your Thunderbird 3 exterior special effects CG and interior set looked excellent. I often wonder what a young filmmaker like you Chris( with your cast and crew) could have done with the budget of the Frakes 2004 movie. As I said, based on your fourteen minute THUNDERBIRDS 2010 film I know that your knowledge of the original Thunderbirds shines as director .

Wow and thats only part 1? I must complement you on a very in depth an beautifully worded review. I would love to read more. :)
And yeah sound was a problem and Rachele is a bit drowned out by score. In a way sound is the key to a successful film, more important than visuals in a way.
ooo

I do see what you mean, it probably should have been lighter and much more of it. Well spotted Purupuss, those are blast ducts.
In the original script The rocket launched from base Concord however i was reading up on launches and discovered the Odyseey Sea launch platform (http://futureshockbks.blogspot.com/2009/04/scittish-space-launch-well-sort-of.html), a mobile sea platform used for satellite launches. and decided to go with something different.
And yep that is the ISS, probably a bad move on my part as it would barely last till 2030 let alone 2068 id does add a tad more realism though, which we also used in the sound, just enough for dramatic tension but little enough to get across "we're in space"

Review - continued! (from 8.04 mins!)
The interior of TB3 is great... just enough ‘hardware’ to be impressive and futuristic. Very high tech. I like the updated outfits; at first I thought they were black, but later saw that they were dark blue... or is that my computer? Suave and sexy... and yes – long hair isn’t very practical in space, but it looks great. And who is to say that in 2068 long hair and beards won’t be the norm?
The sashes are good, but I was initially a little confused as to who the two guys were. Perhaps sashes in the original colours ( although admittedly those pastels were a little ‘naff’!) Nah.. forget my comment about the sashes.. keep the strong, bold colours! The badges were perfect – so glad you didn’t update those.
The sound quality is better inside TB3, and Scott and Alan speak a little slower, which makes it easier to hear them.
The dialogue is believable and nicely technical without being boring or making the viewer feel lost.
I love the way Alan pilots TB3 through—again little details – the co-axial roll and the great view of the station from inside TB3
Well done for having the incident of Alan bumping into the station!¬ Nice to see they aren’t perfect! A lovely touch with a little understated humour.
The travel tube is a good point, and the ‘inserts’ make the viewer aware of what is happening . these ‘close-up’ shots really focus our attention and add so much to the film. There is a lovely complex shot of TB3 nestled against the station, with Earth in the background, and the whole thing slowly rotating. Again, attention to detail makes this so good.
Great sound effects of groaning metal.. although I do think that shoes in 2068 would have progressed beyond those shown in the close-up ; black lace-ups?... perhaps space boots? Not sure..
The TB logo on the oxy-whatsits cylinder was a masterstroke! I had to laugh... SO original Thunderbirds!!
The incoming meteors were really well detailed and the segue from the meteor to the door being cut by the oxy-whatsit torch was smooth!
Little things impressed me a great deal. The continual attention to detail in areas such as the screens and displays in TB3. The radar screen was particularly good and very believable. The silhouette of Scott against the door with the pulsing light behind him added tension as well.
Scott’s response to the crisis.. setting off the oxy cylinder – totally believable and realistic. Another great explosion.
And the escaping air.. how DID you do that effect!
We are treated to several brief shots of TB3, ISS, Alan, Scott, the astronauts, etc; not just excellent images, but a very good technique for heightening tension. Short, snappy shots, great sound effects, good music that doesn’t overpower or detract.
The final moments of ISS – as TB3 heads away and the station is destroyed, are wonderful.
I was intrigued by the ‘beeps’ from the radio when Jeff calls..... where are they from? I did think they were from the Moonbase alarm (UFO) but having listened again, not sure.
The end, before the credits, is a calm ‘everything is alright’ ending. But the comment ‘ It pays to be prepared’ is a warning!
The final credits. I do like your up-dated craft. We see them more clearly here and although they are somewhat changed, they retain the essence of the Thunderbirds ideal.
The last ‘taster’ , with Ocean Pioneer III .. Fabulous! ‘Nothing can go wrong!’ and if I was a child watching this on TV, I’d be absolutely desperate for the next episode! Actually, I’m not a child and I’m still desperate to see more!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful film with us and letting us have such a satisfying glimpse of a Thunderbirds world that stays true to our childhood dreams.
One other point;
I like the fact that you used the ISS.. after all it's a design that works, so it would probably be used again in the future. Although they wouldn't have a Shuttle would they.. but the Ares will be doing that... ! sorry ..rambling here. So , yes, the ISS works!

Again another lovely review, cheers for being so in depth. And thanks for putting a link on the Ufo forum.
There was a debate between Alan having Blank White or red, but i went for red as it suited the darker uniform better and yep its navy, had another debate for black but the slight navy tinge made it much better. The TB10 uniform includes.
1xFruit of the Loom navy Fleece with added sash, epaulettes and Collar markings and Emblem.
1xRAF Issue navy trousers, or Jeans which accidentally slipped in a few times.
1xBelt
1x Impact holster
1x Very beat up pair of combat boots with added sound to make them seem magnetic.
I might wait till the blooper reel before i explain the explosive decompression trick. Though i guess its never explained why Scotts not as high as a kite after blowing up the canister.

I would like to add my congratulations to Chris and Guy for all their hard work on the film, it really payed off.
I would also like to thank Chris for asking me to appear in the film, I really enjoyed recording the dialogue for the newscaster and appearing as the "concerned technition on video-phone". In fact I'm grateful to Chris for taking my idea for a teaser ending, and including it.
The whole thing came about when one day he said that he was looking for a good way to end the film, perhaps something small after the credits. I noticed that at the time, his MSN personal message read "Nothing can possibly go wrong", so I said "Okay, you've got two guys on a boat. One says to the other 'Looks like a storm coming' and the other says 'Relax, what could possibly go wrong?' and then you cut to a shot of a large warning sign that says: Danger, high explosives and some dramatic music plays."
Another of my fondest memories was the day that Chris told me that Shane Rimmer had agreed to voice Jeff Tracy. After that I had no doubt that the film would go down an absolute storm.
I think the whole film turned out fantastically and I really hope that there will be a sequel.

If you have not viewed this new release yet, then you should know director Chris Thompson's 'Thunderbirds 2010' film is fourteen minutes of brilliance bringing the original Thunderbirds story, International Rescue vehicles slightly updated with his respect and acknowledgment of the what came before. Unlike the Jonathan Frakes 'Thunderbirds' 2004 movie that radically altered the legacy and failed. Since you like the Gerry Anderson's other television series , then you should watch Chris' respectful sequel to Gerry Andersons' 'Thunderbirds' 1965-67 tv series, 1966 movie and 1968 movie.

Chris I only speak the truth that must be told of your film. I think Gerry Anderson would praise your effort and salute you with "FAB!". I know that you created(with your team) a far superior THUNDERBIRDS 2010 film, than the multi-million dollar Jonathan Frakes 2004 misfire. Your knowledge and respect of Gerry Anderson's original THUNDERBIRDS is absolutely apparent in your film.

Congratulations, Chrisof, on a fantastic piece of work. On the commercial front I always felt that Thunderbirds would not translate to CGI as well as Captain Scarlet but, having seen your movie, I now know that I was wrong.
You have sympathetically modernised both the vehicles and the music and there is no doubt that this format could be a big success if only someone had the courage to fund Gerry to make a new series. I would certainly want you to be an important part of such a production team if it was ever put together.
The opening and closing credits are terrific and Shane Rimmer makes a fine Jeff Tracy. The Ocean Pioneer teaser is a fabulous idea and really made me nostalgic for more. I find it a really special experience seeing old model sets and locations recreated in CGI.
Unfortunately, I won't be at the Convention but Fanderson would do well to make sure that this fan film is shown there because it would be a huge talking point.

I think this deserves further publicity... can you not send out a press release and see if you can get coverage in the papers! It would act as a nice follow on from the stories that circulated last year where Gerry was having a go at ITV for not allowing him to buy the rights. This would prove to ITV that they are sitting on a hugely profitable franchise.
First we need to spread the word that this is out there - already the video has been viewed 733 times and counting... whereas the trailer has had nearly 5000 views.
Just an idea - what do others think?

Well performance wise the film started at getting 320 in its first 24 hours, we are now down to about 100 today so the film is performing rather well, nowhere near as good as the upper tier american fan films but definitely in the running here. I have no idea what the most successful british fan film is so i really have nothing to compare it against.
I have almost run out of ideas on advertising (ive run out of forums) so i'd welcome suggestions, i don't know if the newspapers would be all that interested (UTV would probably have a giggle at our expense) but who knows.

Actually, Im thinking UTV would be a good one to go for - they have a strange relationship with ITV, who are the owners of Thunderbirds, so they may have a bit of a dig at ITV for not acting, when other shows like Dr Who have worked incredibly well for the BBC.

They also have a great sense of humour & the board is always full of images & stories taking the p*** out of the weeks news etc.
They have a 'Newbie Tuesday' where the new posters get a chance to upload something cool. If its excellent, then it goes on the end of the week newsletter which gets emailed to everyone (as I said, over 100,000 subscribers worldwide).
Best,
James.

The film had been up 22 and a half days and it's had 3,310 views so far.
For those of you who suffer from the dreaded "mathematicitis", that's approximately 150 views a day! :D

Chris your brilliant direction of THUNDERBIRDS 2010 movie proves that you will not be a director sent to 'movie jail'.
At the recent VegasCon 2010 Star Trek Convention Jonathan Frakes stated:
"Frakes told the crowd of thousands of Trekkies that he is in 'movie jail' following the Thunderbirds 'flop' in 2004, but that he is very busing directing for television."
I know this is a common practice in the industry with directors of failed movies, even though he did not have absolute power over the script or final edit cut for THUNDERBIRDS 2004 movie.
