I'm researching a future FAB article about the Anderson show's releases on what might be termed pre-video home entertainment systems. This would mean formats such as 8mm film to run through a projector, but I'm also interested in covering items such as hand-held film viewers, which allowed the user to look at a loop of 8mm (or sometimes 16mm) film.
Do any forum members have one of these? I think I've tracked down what was actually released (I'll post more details when I'm in the same place as my notes) but I'd be fascinated to hear from anyone who has actualy used one and could give me some details of what these were like to use.

I have four 16mm film strips of Supercar from Bell Films, but not the viewer. The idea was to put the 60 frame film strip into the battery operated viewer & slide each frame one at a time as a slide show. I have two of these on my Youtube page, The Vanishing Profesor & The Unbroken Seal). I have another two (The Abominable Snowman & Rescue in Orbit) which I plan to scan & do eventually as well.
I used to have the silent 8mm films of Stingray, Fireball & Thunderbirds when I collected alot of 8mm back in the early 90's. They were ok to watch, but the novelty wore off after a while. They were B/W & had cue cards to explain what was going on. I got bored with them after a while & sold them on.
I still have Fireball Xl5 'Planet 46' from Walton Films in 400ft/Sound with original box art. Its very rare, as its almost the full episode with one scene missing for it to fit on the spool. I love watching that with the whirl of the projector in the background :-)
You might want to check out this site too. It has full scans of the Give-a-Show slides of Supercar, Fireball, Stingray, Thunderbirds & Joe 90...

Wow. Thats a blast from the past, thanks Mr Jim, for the link to the Chad Valley projector site. I only remember having the Dr Who set as a child. i'm really going to enjoy looking at these old sets again. :)

I remember having a Chad Valley Give-A-Show slide projector and I have a feeling that I had the Fireball slides. I certainly had some Doctor Who ones.
BTW, your Supercar one has been uloaded back to front :)
