Here is the complete set of the Supermarionation Japanese opening title sequences, fully subtitled into English!

With thanks to Fanderson for providing the translation for Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 & UFO. My friend Steve Okubo translated Stingray for me.

Which one is your favorite? They were a lot of fun to do...

Wow. Great work finding and translating.

Crikey though - hated all of them. :) Why not just stick with the fantastic originals - they could just do the voice overs in Japanese. Most Japanese anime seems to have a song though so maybe I shouldn''t be suprised. At least UFO gets away with just a voice over. Sky One flies at the speed of light though?

Most countries tend to do their own versions of imported series. In the UK, we had Battle of the Planets instead of Gatchaman. Power Rangers instead of Super Sentai. Star Fleet instead of X-Bomber. Your right about the Japanese anime having songs, so I think they did it to help sell the series, along with the records that was released.

Yes, in the U.S. we had Battle Of The Planets too.

I'm not a fan of these Japanese opening credits either but I kinda liked Joe 90, UFO and The Mysterons' warning! Couldn't stand the others however in particular the Captain Scarlet opening.
Why do the Japs have to change the opening titles?

Interesting thought - I wonder if The Secret Service was ever shown in Japan? What would they have done with that lovely opening music by The Mike Sammes Singers also how would have they translated Father Unwin's gobbledegook?:)

The Secret Service wasn't shown in Japan, only in the UK & only for a small run in three regions. Try watching the title sequences again...the music might grow on you lol.

Probably Revenge for what we did to Super Sentai.
Not a fan of the lyrics but it was to bring it in line with Japanese television so it would have been a wise move and it seems to have worked, Gerrys shows are still extremely popular in Japan.

A good job the Japanese didn't broadcast it - I just dread to think what those opening titles might have looked like.

Excellant work, Mr Jim!

I'd say my favourite one was Thunderbirds (although why destroy the Thunderbirds march when that had no lyrics in the first place??)

Captain Scarlet was dreadfully awful! :o:confused::(

Terrific video. Always had a soft spot for those crazy Japanese openings - and you're right, some of it does get catchy after a while.

Will there be a follow-up? With this;

and, um, all this random screaming?

Completely off the point here, but didn't it get shown in France?

Yes Kinggodzillak The Secret Service was shown in France with that title Service Secret. Is this still from the French version of the show?

Cool Kinggodzillak, I have never seen the Space 1999 before you linked. If it can be found in better quality, then I could get it translated & subbed, as I have the full song on a Japanese compilation CD, along with the lyrics in Hiragana. Theres also a cool 3 minute song for UFO that I'd quite like to do at some point & create a proper music video for it. Someone did attempt to make one which is on Youtube in rough quality, but it isn't the way I'd like to do it.

I didn't know about the Secret Service in France, so I stand corrected!

I'll think about doing Terrahawks.....last & when I have the energy for it lol.
