What are other people's views on the announcement about the new convention? I think it's great news, it's been a long time since Sector 25! Hopefully by that time Gerry's next project will have been given the green light too, so maybe something to celebrate?

The conventions are great fun, the only problem is they go so incredibly fast.
Granted they are not cheap events to attend, especially when you factor in travel costs etc etc , but IMO they are well worth the cost. At at only con one every three to four years you do have plenty of time to save up for one.
I shall definitely be at the 2010 con, unless something drastic happens to stop me going.

Well, I am somewhat disabled...so if it were to be held in Buffalo, NY, I would ge thrilled. If not, I wold be bummed out, but hey, don't let that stop everyone else from having fun...LOL.

I also plan on attending, looking forward to it already!
The only daunting prospect for me is that I'll probably be coming by myself next year (I'm sure that's something that puts off a lot of people), so if others will be in the same situation then it would be good to get to know some people on here first then all meet up at the con.
Maybe we'll need a separate thread for that?

This forum is an ideal place to get to know other members before attending a con, then you can go along knowing that you will not be alone when you are there as you are already acquainted with other like minded members, and at the very least you be able to put a face to the user name.

All being well I'd like to attend as well but like Achilles Messenger I'd be coming by myself. Anybody else on here from the Worcester area...:)

I agree. I was thinking the same thing.:)

Can't wait, but don't know Bristol all that well. From what I can remember, the one way system is a nightmare!

My wife and i will definately be attending the next convention. We will be coming from the North West, if anyone needs a lift we can manage two possibly three passengers. so if you need a lift and are close to the M6/M5 book your seat now.

I had to tackle York's one way system every weekend for 3 years when our daughter was at uni. So Bristol will be a doddle!!

Bristol doesn't really have a one way system, so it shouldn't be a problem. We will provide travel directions nearer the con.
In the meantime, I am happy to answer any travel quesitons anyone has.

It would be good if on the Con timetable we could have a Fanderson Forum get together perhaps in an agreed room inbetween other events. It would be nice to get to know everyone.

It's got worse !

You may find the opposite to be true - I used to live in York and went back recently - it makes far more sense than Bristol !

It's pretty easy apart from a slightly tricky bit at the hotel.
You come off the motorway, and drive 5 minutes along the main road to the railway station. Easy. Then there's a big roundabout just before the station where you can see the hotel, but you can't exit to the hotel from it. You have to go past the station, turn round on the roundabout and come back.
I think a few people will get trapped circling that first roundabout trying to get to the hotel road (well, I did last time I was there ).

See what I mean ! :D Seriously though, it's probably no worse than many other cities, but it was much better before they redesigned the area in the centre to incorporate the millenium 'fountain'. Otherwise, if you've not been before, it is a great place to visit.

My wife and I (ooh get us!! lol) shall be training it. Because I dont drive and my wife hates driving and she likes to relax when we go anywhere...and our weekend starts when we are on the train!

Maybe at the 2010 convention the producers of the new UFO movie will preview at least a trailer ...at most several rough cut scenes and the actors from the new 2011 film for a panel discussion.

I lived in Bristol until last year, and I don't drive so I relied on public transport. Here's a tip - don't use the buses! They are dreadful, expensive, and most of the drivers don't speak English. However, the hotel, rail station, and town centre, and docks are all within easy walking distance, which is very convenient indeed.
I'm going as long as finances permit - I still have some work contacts in Bristol, so I'm hoping to ease the travel costs by making it a business trip!

I will put up a thread for people attending the con to indicate that they are attending the con and maybe identify themselves in some way, so you know who they are at the con. We are also looking at possibly including forum names on badges.
In the mean time, why not include the fact that you are attending the con in your forum signature?

As some one who uses the buses day in and day out in Bristol, I would disagree. On the whole, the buses in Bristol are fine. :)
If you are travelling from outside of Bristol, you probably won't need to use the local buses, so please don't let this thought put you off from attending the con.
Likewise, I notice the comments about driving in the local area of the hotel. We will provide detailed directions to the hotel nearer to the con. I have run cons at this hotel for many years and most drivers don't get lost, so don't let it put you off attending the con.
There is a thread for travelling to the con, so if you have got any queries, please ask. We have got locals who both drive and use public transport, who can provide answers.
