UK postal services permitting, the last issue of FAB magazine of 2009 will be winging it's way to members from Monday 5th October.

As befits our splendid front cover, we look back at the end of UFO and the tentative beginnings of Space:1999 in the 'The Void Ahead'. The Midas Touch examines the pulsating conclusion to New Captain Scarlet, Grey Skulls, while Timelash contributors reminisce about the first episode of the original puppet show, The Mysterons.
FAB 64 Spreads and front cover, starring Commander John Koenig and Dr Helena Russell, Space:1999

There's a fantastic behind the scene photo feature on the Stingray episode Tom Thumb Tempest, and an insanely detailed guide to the WSP Fleet of Fireball XL5 (think you know your XL2 from your XL7?).

The third part of Stephen Baxter's look at the non-TV21 world of Anderson comics turns its attention to the appearance of Captain Scarlet in Candy and Solo. There's also the final part of our SHADO personnel guide, FAB Mail, FAB News...

Ah!.. but is it a candid shot of the command crew outside Apha at night, during "The last sunset"?
Koenig and Russell were "hands off" during season one, but come on, we've all heard of "safe sex" but surely that's taking it too far?

I suspect this will hit UK doormats on Wednesday unless you have a postman like ours who delivers it to the same number house in a different street.

Hmmmm - there are a surprising number of postmen these days who seem to do exactly as Derek describes. And in my case, not everything was re-directed by the lucky recipients, leading to the postman concerned eventually being moved to another round (when IMO he should have been fired).

Luckily FAB 64 was not affected and mine was delivered this morning. No time to read it now, other than to note the imminent release of a new edition of the Fanderson UFO soundtrack set.

Sweet......

Handy if - as has happened in the past - I spill my tea over it.... :)

Best looking issue so far, haven't had time to read it yet but it really looks the biz!:)
Not keen on the cover though being more of a Super-M fan.

Being 18 in 1976, I was more concerned with going out than staying in, mind you I've just watched 'Breakaway' in its re-mastered form on ITV4 and I was pleasantly surprised.

I think the pic quality had something to do with my disinterest back in 76, - aside from girls, gigs and beer.

I never quite understood why a series fimed in 35mm looked so poor on TV (compared say to Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons or Joe 90), that is until recently when it was re-mastered ,

I might give a second chance - 33 years later!

Keep up the fine work:)

It was quite common for ITV to show ratty old 16mm prints of Space: 1999, which didn't showcase the series to its best advantage.

My issue arrived yesterday ( 07/10 ) and I had a good flick through. Spotted an error in the Ray Barrett obit' - the character he played in Mogul / The Troubleshooters was Peter Thornton not Thompson.
Overall the issue looks good with some interesting features - it's gone to the top of my reading pile anyway...
Hopefuly there will be more details forthcoming as to what changes there are to the running order / tracks on the UFO cd reissue. I can't really afford to buy it again just for a few new tracks and a redesigned booklet.:)

Lord Brett

Aaargh - sorry! The Troubleshooters error came from a newspaper obit for Ray Barrett which I referenced. Serves me right for believing what I read in the papers!

I renewed my membership on the 6th October and FAB Issue No.64 arrived today 9th Oct. Steve must have flown it down in XL5!

Another great issue from what I can see. (My eye's need to be tested again, and then new glasses, so I'm squinting a bit at the moment). Very much looking forward to reading Stephen Baxters Pt.03 on the history of Anderson shows in the comics. ("It's not a comic, it's a graphic novel").

Delighted to see the 1st page of "The Secret Service" story that appeared in Issue No.1 (or was it 2?) of "Countdown" magazine back in 71. At the time I had no idea of the show, it didn't appear on TV here in Australia until some years later and NOT where I was living. Eventually saw it after it's DVD release.

Oh, and thanks for the heads up on "Century 21 Vol.3", I went straight online and placed a pre-order for it. (Since the scans of "TV21" have become unavailable I look forward to these releases. It's not quiet the same as reading each issue, but if they release 10 or 20 of them I won't be complaining).

Merry Christmas to all involved. Have a great 2010!

I've enjoyed reading Stephen Baxters Comic Anderson article. The history of Solo & Candy and Andy is very interesting, as I have never really took much notice of them before. I'd love to read some of those Mark of the Mysterons stories. The Stingray pictures are brilliant, it just goes to show theres so much stuff stil out there to be discovered :-)

Hi,

Just got my Fab 64 today, very excited about the UFO CD re-release...
Have to say that the very, very high standard of Fanderson's output is second to none! Fab mag is always a thumpin' good read, the UFO Personnel Dossier and Making Space 1999 especially for me this time round! The behind the scenes Stingray pics are also interesting as it clearly shows the scale of the Stingray interior (I thought it would be smaller). I also had no idea so many craft were featured in Fireball XL5, I think more guides like this and the Personnel Dossier would be a great idea for the other shows.
All in all, Fab really is a publication to be proud of.

As I renewed, I also got the Century 21 Diary, which I think is a great gift (and will sit nicely on the bookshelf with my original Century 21 diary... - blast! gives away my age slightly there...)

I really enjoyed the magazine, especially the WSP fleet article and the making of Space: 1999!

I may be in the minority here, and no disrespect intended to Mr Baxter. I generally skip over the comic articles as they don't interest me (although I'm sure they interest others). Will there be a future issue of FAB without a comic article, as I feel they take up a bit too much room, and there seems to be one virtually every issue. I'd much rather read a different type of article. Again, no offense intended to Mr Baxter, he certainly does know his material well!

Also, I am interested in reading the second part of Fanderson's history, the first part appearing in the FAB Anniversary Extra. Any chance this will be done in the near future, as it was promised in FAB 56?

Again congrats on the latest issue! :D

Captain Ochre, out.

I think each issue of FAB tries to find a nice balance of features to please everyone & you can take what you want from it. I'm not a big Space 1999 fan & usually skip those articles, but the one in this issue grabbed my attention as it looks at the preproduction side of things & what could have been. I have also found myself reading about stuff that has never interested me before.

If you look at the history of the Century 21 organisation, you will soon realise that the publishing arm (ie; comics, books, annuals, etc) was an even larger operation that the actual programmes. So there is alot of material to cover. I have always found FAB to be well balanced in the type of articles in each issue.

Glad you've been enjoying FAB 64! So great to hear what you lot think, as always we want your feedback and ideas!

We appreciate the comic articles are not to everyones taste, we still have another two parts of Stephen's comic masterpiece, but once we're done we'll give the comics a bit of a rest in FAB... However, I'd love to cover Solo in more detail, but that will be a few years down the line...

We've loads of ideas for more complete guides like the SHADO and XL5 one, but as always keep your thinking caps on for more possible barrel scraping exhaustive articles!

Also, remember to dig out your Space Precinct DVDs, and re-watch Friends to send in your views for next issues Timelash.

Cheers,
Mike

Stephen Baxter, is in my humble opinion, the best science fiction writer around today! I can recommed many of his books, and in particular his "NASA" series, "Voyage", "Titan" and "Moonseed"
Great stuff!

...and the BBC audio book was good too! Can't wait for it to come out on CD. Although Stephen Baxter did say he had a CD of the story...lucky bugger!
And, if you are into "Steampunk/Alt victorian histroy, "Anti-ice" by SB is a damn fine read too!
Stephen told me that "XL5" was a major factor in his childhood, and just for that, Gerry should be proud...

Thank you for the reply Mike. I do skim over the comics article, however I just feel sometimes like it's a bit too much that EVERY issue of FAB has a comic related article of late. It's not necessarily that I don't appreciate it, however it is a considerable amount of pages each issue.

Just my opinion, and I do agree Mr Baxter has done a top job with his research and knowledge.

I was studying the picture of the three Angel Interceptors at the bottom of page 3 - the index page. The picture is of such high quality that it deserved a bit of study so I was actually comparing the 3 models. However if you look at the back left leg of the middle aircraft it looks as if it is directly behind the leg of the aircraft furtherest away. Perhaps this is a trick of the shot or nobody expected anybody to be studying this shot 40 years later :)

Let me just say a quick thank you for posting again another one of my questions in FAB. Thats the second in the last two issues of FAB. My questions are to the point, heartfelt and sometimes passionate.
Love the behind the scenes of Stingray, can`t wait for the UFO CD, hope you do the same for the Space 1999 anniversary. Keep it up folks.

However if you look at the back left leg of the middle aircraft it looks as if it is directly behind the leg of the aircraft furtherest away.

That's probably because the models have been posed for a publicity shot. The lead angel was always in front of the other two in an arrow formation. The wingspans wouldn't allow all three to sit together like that.

FAB64 arrived this morning and there looks to be a lot of interesting articles. Look forward to reading it. Like others have commented upon, perhaps the 3 part article on every actor who has appeared in UFO could have been truncated, as that's been going on for nearly a year now.

Personally, the comics article was the highlight for me. Loved it. :)

Looking forward to reading The Secret Service strip. :)

Enjoyed most of the content except for the XL5 article which I didn't find terribly interesting and some of the pictures were really too small to make out.

Why no Ask Anderson this time though ?

I was a Fanderson member for a year back in the early 90's and never renewed. Joining the club recently again I just want to say the magazine has come on leaps and bounds. Fantastic stuff. Like the Stingray behind the scenes pics and the Secret Service strip. Haven't really looked at the rest yet but I'm on the case.

Overall I really enjoyed FAB 64 - the behind the scenes pics of Stingray were great, and the Space:1999 article excellent! I didn't particularly care for the Fireball XL5 feature - I'm not sure I really need to know about every craft that appeared - especially when one could hardly see the pictures of them! Same for UFO actors - it's a little bit too exhaustive for my own personal taste, you can't please everyone I guess.
I've never read any of the comic articles by Stephen Baxter but a sudden interest of late means I'll be taking a look from the beginning at some point soon.

All that said, FAB is still up to the usual high standards, so keep up the good work!
