What lovely piece of Anderson merchandise has fallen into your lap recently? I'll start off with this lovely 1962 Supercar annual my FAB co-Editor Mike Jones found for me (he already has it) while we were out in Hitchen the other week.

It cost 60 pence! I'll repeat that...60 pence!

Here's my latest purchase, the stingray story book The Deadly Alliance.
I got it for £4.99 on ebay and its a cracking story with brilliant artwork. The story links well to all the continuity in TV Century 21 with bereznik forming an alliance with Titan.

I bought a supersize mole from a car boot last week for 50p. I know its a bit modern but it looks quite good next to the Firefly.

I've bought the attached on eBay, not sure if it's one of the better annuals or not but it's a welcome addition to my collection. I hope our friends at Royal Mail don't let this become a victim of the 20m+ backlog of post!

I also recently managed to get myself a complete set of the 1960's Thunderbirds postcards showing the main title cards of each character, but without any text. Only cost me a few pounds and they're in fantastic condition.

I think the next item I need to get is a money tree - anyone know where I can get one (cheap, haha)?

I gate to brag but I got that TV 21 annual for a quid about five years ago at Bingley market!

There is still gold to be had in jumble sales and on market stalls - more so than charity shops, many of whom aren't interested in sixties and seventies stuff any more.

The one thing that puzzles me about TV Century 21 was that in later years the comic's quality deteriorated. But the annuals improved. These are the five annuals from the first series of TV21, there were other annuals into the 70s, but latter ones had no Anderson content.

How many of us bought the 1971 TV21 annual because it states on the cover it features JOE 90 , when in fact it contains none whatsoever????

Frank Bellamy did the Thunderbird 2 on that TV21 annual - one of my favourite covers.

Frank Bellamy was also the first choice of artist for Stingray when TV 21 started, but he wanted to see out his contract on the eagle comic.
Which is why the job went to Ron Embleton and we all know what he went on to do......>

And after completing these fantasic paintings he went on to illustrate the first few Scarlet stories in TV21.

I was at the Chicago Toy Show this past spring and landed the Stingray Motorized Model Kit. It's all complete, everything is still in the plastic, and I only paid seven dollars for it. I was told by our group leader that day that it was the find of the show. By the way, I thought I posted this comment already, but it doesn't appear on my computer, so if this is a repeat, I apologize.

The SCARLET caption cards on this thread reminded me that my last piece of Anderson merchandise (and by no means as recent as this thread requires!) were a full set of caption cards along with their film frame equivalents.

I really ought to get around to having the film elements properly mounted for display...

Not a recent find exactly, but probably one of the most unusual things I've got off eBay is a resin cast of the head of the Father Unwin puppet. I know it's an odd purchase because my partner looks at it quizzically, looks at me quizzically, then shakes her head and walks away.

They seem to come up on eBay every couple of years or so, but I've never really found out what they're for - whether they were from the studios or whether they were just cast by an enthusiastic amateur. Any clues?

I couldn't believe my luck today - walking past Oxfam in Lincoln at lunchtime, and a colourful Thunderbirds book caught my eye in the window. On closer inspection, i realised it was an original 1967 annual (printed in 1966).

For a fiver!

The Frank Bellemy cover is fantastic, and the contents are superb. Not too keen on the comic artwork used in all the annuals, but the other content - specifications, profiles, launch procedures etc, are all excellent.

They dont make 'em like that anymore!

TonyB

They dont make 'em like that anymore!

Now that is an understatement, and its a damn shame too.

There are the odd bargains to be had if you visit enough Charity shops, Car Boot sales and Flea Markets, unfortunately apart for the aforementioned Charity shop bargains, the other sellers tend to know that the annuals are worth something, even the sellers on the car boot sales.

The B & W set of Thunderbirds cards are available to download from the link below. The folder also contains the rarer second set of colour cards. Again these scans are all the product of the hard working scanners at Project 21.

Is that Sun Probe on top of the Mole's tractor base?

Silent Bob
14th October 2009, 08:22 AM
Yes thats the Sunprobe model on the Mole tractor unit. It was a publicity photo taken by Doug Luke probably for TV Century 21, but it was never used in the comic.

250 quid!

Best of luck with that, Oxfam.....

TonyB
15th October 2009, 02:29 PM
I have seen mentioned before that Oxfam do not have normal charity shop prices on a lot of stuff they stock.

I saw a program recently on the BBC where a couple of long standing local bookshops were forced to close because of Oxfam. They were selling all their books at just below normal high street prices, the difference being was that all their stock was donated by the public. Some of those interviewed after donating books were rather dismayed to see that Oxfam had caused local business' to close and local people to lose their jobs.

The other thing is that Oxfam is run as a business not a charity, and the senior staff are pulling huge annual salaries, much the same as any other large corporation, if you want the best then you have to pay for it was the theme running through the senior company staff interviewed.

Not much charity going on there then, especially if you are near the top......

Simon Morris
15th October 2009, 07:56 PM
I think pretty much all big charities in the UK are now run as (rather profitable) businesses, with highly paid executives and posh offices. Take a look at the oppulence that is the RSPCA - they're happy to take your money (and then keep sending begging letters for ever more, while circulating your details to other 'charities'....) but you just try getting them to attend when animals are in trouble. Unless a film crew happens to be nearby of course.

But to get this back on topic (sort of), clearly someone in Oxfam has recognised that this book by Gerry Anderson's ex-wife might be worth something to a dedicated collector.

Although I don't care how dedicated a Gerry Anderson collector might be, they'd have to be out of their mind to spend 250 quid on - of all things - a Four Feather Falls book!

I can't even remember the last time I bought something Gerry Anderson related other than like a newer release like the PE Eagle and such. I recently did complete my collection on FAB magazine by getting a few earlier issues.

I would have loved to be at that auction held earlier this year that had lots of GA stuff from his office. I noticed much of the leftovers showed up on Ebay and I believe only one item sold from like 60 - 70 items. Probably because the prices were so high, much higher than what the going rates were at the auction.
