I thought i would start a seperate thread for info, questions or images relating to the greatest comic ever published and any other aspects of Century 21 Publishing.

This weekly comic is without doubt, one of the major sucesses of the Century 21 merchandising campaign.

Here is some of the surviving artwork from TV Century 21. Not mine i hasten to add, the only original artwork i have is from the 1965 and 1966 Stingray annuals. I got that artwork when i was working at World Distributors in the early 1980's, World had nothing to do with the annuals and i dont know how the art ended up at their offices in Manchester. At the time there was also lots of boxes of unsold 1969 Thunderbirds/Captain Scarlet annuals there as well.

Yes that is a cracking TV21 special. Its a great pity they didn't do something similar for Thunderbird 6.

Thanks for the images Bob, its always good to see the original artwork to these classic stories. I would love to see your Stingray artwork if you could post it.
Its incredible to think that this was still "laying around" as late as the 1980's but then british comics and their art have always been ignored in comparison to their American contemparies.
Amongst my art collection I have an original Bellamy Thunderbirds page that I will post once when I get a moment.
Going slightly off topic for a moment, its good to see that DC Thompson have finally realised that they have a treasure trove of art stored away in their warehouses from their Commando comics. They have been scanning the original cover art in high resolution & posting it on their website for the fans to see, although its gone a bit quiet over the summer, hopefully they will start up again soon. :)

Id be interested to see photographs of the Thunderbirds fire engines from city of fire/30 minutes after noon that appeared in the comics.
Im pretty sure there was only 1, a black and white shot, but wondering if there was any more that people know of.

PS I have been watching your build of the Thunderbirds fire tenders, and although not a model builder i just have to say they are totally amazing. The amount of time and effort you have put in just sourcing the items needed, is staggering. Really well done.

The time taken to identify and then source some of the parts is absolutely staggering, I have followed the threads over on the Eagletransporter forum, the time taken actually building the models seems to pale into insignificance at times when compared to the research required.
Looking forward to seeing the finished results though.

all the help from people has been paying off, should have something to show soon, as you say, the models shouldnt take that long to build if you have all the bits and know where they go etc.
I think it may be a good idea to have a particular area of the fanderson forum dedicated to peoples replica models?

Agree with everything said Mike! -----sometimes something pops up out of the normal Anderson fare------------------such as the Stingray cd,that it seems almost like something lost has been found (if you know what i mean)
Following the thread and then hopefully seeing the models completed, is like ghosts from the past returning.
I'm not a modelmaker, but your use of the thread and the dvd/blu-ray stills, has i'm pretty sure opened a whole new avenue for others to follow.
I can't wait!!!!!!

TV Century 21 Thunderbirds Extra.
Nice to see the original English version of this annual. I could now compare The Dutch and the English versions. Some content is the same, some can be found in the second Dutch annual and in the Dutch version of this annual some content of the Lady Penelope summer special is incorparated.
As I own some of the original artwork from this annual it is nice to see a copy of the first time this artwork was printed.

I always thought the UFO annual was one of the best annuals I'd ever read (whether a Gerry Anderson-based Annual or any other kind). I've still got mine on the bookshelf in excellent condition and would never sell it.
Having all-text stories made a nice change (and well illustrated by pics from the series). I thought the stories were very intelligent and - in particular - the characterisations in the annual were far closer to the series than they were in 'Robert Miall's' novelisations for Pan Books!

(I'm no expert, but I've resolved most "issues". There's a program for everything these days. PM me if you want. I may be able to advise. That's what this is all about).
Have you tried "Simple Comic" or "ComicBookLover"?
"Simple Comic" is free. (Just Google, it should turn up).
"Comic Book Lover" is iTunes for Comics. Check it out: http://www.bitcartel.com/comicbooklover/index.html
Not free but worth the cost.
And UnRarX will unpack any RAR files. (Just Google, it should turn up).
Once UnRarX is installed, a double click will unpack any rar file.
Just wanted to thank all those people sharing these wonderful memories. I started collecting TV21 at issue No.181; (I arrived late in the Anderson World), so seeing the early works is a joy. I magaed to download issues No. 1 to 156 from a friendly site before they ran into some technical issues. (Hopefully back soon). The downloads aren't as good as a hardcopy, but the very next best thing.

Actually I am of the opinion Bob is wrong - while I have no physical confirmation (although the trade press heavily implies it), I believe World were responsible for the production, print and distribution of the 'Stingray' and first two 'TV Century 21' annuals, based on editorial material supplied from City Magazines in Fleet Street. Their size and print quality matches other World annuals at the time. It was only with the first 'Thunderbirds' and 'Lady Penelope' annuals that City took on their own production with the setting up of Century 21 books, with a larger format and colour throughout. I think World may also have had a hand in distribution of the later annuals, as most trade ad queries were directed to their London office showroom in the late 1960s.
Alan Fennell, the editor of 'TV21', later became a managing director at World after leaving the editorship of 'Look-in' in late 1974/early 1975, which may explain how World got to reprint material like 'The Daleks' in the late 1970s annuals.

As far as I know original artwork for the first 'Thunderbirds' and 'Lady Penelope' annuals was shipped to the Netherlands to be used for the Dutch versions of those annuals. This artwork was never send back and the artwork ended up on somebody's attick after the closure of the Dutch publisher.
In the 90's the artwork was sold to a comic shop in Utrecht, were I bought the artwork I now own. There was a lot more, but I didn't have the money to buy it. The rest has been on display at a toy museum for a while.
I think this artwork is still in the hands of one of the other Dutch members of this forum.

By 'annuals' I presume you mean the TV2000 Thunderbirds Extras? While there was a Dutch version (softback album) of the first Captain Scarlet annual, the only Dutch hardback of a Century 21 publication I am aware of is 'The Monkees' - their edition of the first annual, ©1967?

Yes, there were 3 Thunderbirds annuals and 1 Captain Scarlet annual, all softback, in the Netherlands. I wasn't interested in the rest,

The 'Captain Scarlet' album indicates there were ones for 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Berekstreken' ('Daktari') as well.
Also, there was a later 'Department S' one (around 1970?).
Do you have any idea what the content of these were?
hwels

Now that you mention Daktari: I remember I had a daktari album too! If I remember correctly it was mainly text-story with photo's. But 'Berenstreken' is not Daktari, but from another Ivan Tors production (Ben the Bear?).
I've done some research and found out that the Daktari Album I had was not done by the publisher who did 'Captain Scarlet', so I can't tell you the content was.

I think you may mean 'Gentle Ben'? As I can't read Dutch, and the text under 'Berenstreken' mentioned 'Daktari' and Ivan Tors, I assumed that was what it meant.

You're right, it is 'Gentle Ben'. By googling 'Daktari' and 'Berenstreken' I found the covers of those two albums on the internet. The cover of 'Captain Scarlet' is to be found on the same page. That's when I found out that the cover I remember from my 'Daktari'-album didn't match the cover on that page.

Well at least you've cleared up why the artwork was at World Distributors in Manchester. When i was there during 1981-85, i was told by someone who claimed to be there in the 60's that World had nothing to do with the Stingray annuals.
I knew they had produced some of the TV21 annuals and Thunderbirds/Lady P annuals as there were lots of boxes of unsold annuals stored there for years. Along with, as i mentioned before, the Thunderbirds/Captain Scarlet Annual and A LOT of the Space 1999 annuals.
I am going to post scans of the art in the new year.
The cover of the second Stingray Annual by Ron Embleton belongs now to Steve Kyte and bloody gorgeous it is to!!
PS Will the Complete Gerry Anderson Comic History have any update in the near future, as i have found it fascinating.
I forgot about 'Mark of the Mysterons' thanks for clearing that up as well.

Sorry to break into the conversion in progress ....
Is there a special flatbed scanner for scanning copies of TV21?
I've only ever seen the A4 sized flatbeds. I'm assumimg there is a larger model?
And thanks to Silent Bob for all the excellent links.
Still hoping for TV21 from 156 on one day .......
(I started collecting at No.181).

There are larger flatbed scanners (A3), but often an A4 one is used, each page bing scanned in two parts, then those parts joined together...

In which case I'm even more impressed! It must be a HUGE amonut of time consuming repetitive work scanning page and page, TWICE and then editing them together. In which case I can only offer my grateful thanks to those peoples who do this and who are so willing to share their results with others.

Someone has been busy.
On ebay there are 2 sellers offering cd/dvd collections of TV 21 and Countdown.
There are 10 issues of TV 21 per disc for a fiver from one seller while a different seller is offering nearly 100 issues of Countdown/TV Action for a tenner.
Nice way to get the issues without a remortgage
I won't post links in case this practice is frowned upon.

Why would anyone buy these items? A simple Google search could find them all online for free.

Many thanks to Silent Bob for these wonderful links!
But it wouldn't be me if I didn't have a moan. I can't get some of them to work.
And as for RapidShare ... is the only way to get stuff downloaded by paying for membership? I can't get the "free" downloads to work! They always complain of timing out ...
Anyhoo ... I'd really like to get a hold of Mike Noble's "Star Trek" strips (I know this isn't Andersonian except for the fact that they appeared in TV21) ... could anyone point me at a link?
I am still, even though I am now ancient, a die-hard Comics fan. And I am still a huge fan Of Mike Noble's work. He is easily my favourite British comic artist of all time. I am very much enjoying the Century 21 strip collections, and I hope they continue for many years to come. I'd love to see a collection exclusively of Mr. Noble's work. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think he gets the kudos he deserves. People go on about Ron Embleton and Frank Hampson (I say this with respect to the afore-mentioned gentlemen) but IMHO Mr. Noble is up there with the best of them.
I also love Ron Turner's work and I am happy to see it turn up in Century 21.
I'd like to see some of Rob Hamilton's (I think that's the name work in Century 21), artist of Agent 21 and other strips.
Anyhoo, I'm starting to ramble. I'm just pleased to have discovered this forum (thanks to the most recent issue of FAB News) and found out about these amazing resources.

Membership of Rapidshare isn't very expensive, 6 Euros for a month, even less if you join for longer. It's well worth it, especially if you join one of the Rapishare forums.
I enjoy posting the links for the comics, as it means less and less people are paying for them on eBay.
Heres the link for all the Mike Noble 'Star Trek' art from TV21 series 2.

As there seems to be a massive number of UFO fans here, i thought i would post this link. Its for the 1971 UFO Annual which is becoming quite scarce now. :)

This seems to have gone from mediafire ... sigh ... can it be found anywhere else ?

Thanks again to Silent Bob! I have taken his advice and signed up to Rapidshare.
This thread has really opened up a whole new world to me. I was completely unaware about the sheer volume of material (printed) that was available on the Web.
At the risk of being a pain and always asking questions ...
Are any of the "Solo" issues available anywhere? It's a complete mystery to me how I managed to avoid this comic when it first came out but I would swear I've never heard of it. Stephen Baxter's Fab News article just made me want to see it even more. (I suppose it is possible I did read it at the time and have completely forgotten about it ... seems unlikely. As I have said elsewhere I have been a life-long comics fan and it is really odd if I never bought an issue of Solo ... is there any reason why this might never have made it to Scotland?).
Also, on an excellent Space Patrol site I found out that there was a strip in -- of all places -- the Beezer. I also have no recollection of this despite getting the Beano/Dandy/Beezer/Topper weekly in the 60's. Can this be found anywhere?
(Oh heck I am becoming a pain. Sorry).

DC Thomson are very strict about usage and reproduction of their material, as evidenced by the copyright on every image in the online guide, and limitations of size (no more than 250 pixels large):

http://homepages.tesco.net/~space.patrol/SpacePatrol/Beezer02.htm
In return for compliance and approving these web pages, their syndication department were overwhelmingly helpful, and allowed me to purchase a complete set of colour copies. Whether this is still the case (I bought mine in 2002) I couldn't say but I would add if anyone started distributing CDs or online sets of these, I imagine they would come down on them like a ton of the proverbial...

And can I repeat how great his Space Patrol site is?

I have lots of issues of Beezer from the Scanarama Yahoo group. You will be able to find pretty much any comics you want on there.
I will also try and upload the UFO annual to Rapidshare sometime this week. i have searched for two years for scanned copies of Solo, they just dont seem to be out there. i have some scans of the Candy comic though.
Here is a link to some other Beezers. but i'm not sure they are the issues your looking for.

Awesome thread Silent Bob!
I love Anderson comics, especially the Project SWORD strip in SOLO. Rough and raw!
I also love the 60's Armada Thunderbirds novels cover art by Peter Archer. Does anyone know if Peter did any of the box art for the Thunderbirds or other JR21 toys back then?

Oh man, Paul Woods! You've just increasing my cravings for Solo .... I do have a copy of the wonderful Project SWORD annual, thank heavens ....
Can't believe I never ever bought an issue of Solo ....
Silent Bob : Supercar Gold Key comics. That takes me back to my childhood.
Don't think I owned any of those comics. I remember "Steve Zodiac and the Fireball XL5". I also seem to remember a "Space Patrol" issue : could it have been called "Larry Dart and the Galasphere 347"? (I should really check Technodelic's site again ...)
You might be interested to know that the first three issues of Supercar had covers by the legendary Wally Wood. This wasn't Mr. Wood's only involvement with Anderson properties, as he did artwork for Fireball XL5 lunchboxes.

And experts on Wallace 'Wally' Wood's art say he didn't do the Gold Key covers...
